Starting a simple liquid culture method
    #575375 - 03/10/02 10:43 PM (22 years, 14 days ago)

there are no home brew stores and I cant wait for the malt extract to come in the mail. I have seen information on using honey water it does look good can anyone give me a little rundown or list of how this is done & would it help to add sugar to the honey used to create a liquid culture to expand my spores for future use. What else can be used (found easy)to create a liquid culture.would makeing brown rice powder into a liquid(mixed well with water) work? THanks

you can do this without a pc or a glovebox.
just steam your jar like you would pf style,
since this is water it doesn't require high pressures to penetrate like grains do.
the lid of the jar needs to be prepared beforehand by drilling a 3/8 hole near the rim and stuffing it full of polyfil [polyester fiber for stuffing pillows, found in crafts dept.].

then put a layer of foil over the jar,
then screw on the lid,
then cover with another layer of foil.
we don't want the polyfil to get wet,
either from above or below.
with the lid prepared thusly,
you can fill the jar halfway with dextrose/karo/honey/sugar water, 4% is recommended, i.e. 4 grams of honey/karo syrup/dextrose, etc. per 100 cc/ml of water.
steam it,
let it cool
then just inject your spores thru the polyfil, foil and all, and then store in a warm area.
within a few days you should see growth.
then, just reverse the process to draw up inoculant,
slide a sterile syringe in,
draw up the solution, tilting the jar if needed to reach all of it,
and use to inoculate as you normally would.
and yes, brown rice flour will work too, instead of sugars.

my method (and yes; it works ):
fill 1/2 pint jar to 100cc line with tap water
remove needle from an empty syringe
i use karo light corn syrup (with vanilla because i couldnt find anything else but it still works) and suck up about 9-10cc of teh syrup and add it to the water.
mix until desolved.
i use ball plastic lids.
put lid on but not tight; maybe 1/4 turn from tight.
put in microwave for 5 or 6 minutes; but watch the solution after 1 or 2 minutes.
once it starts toboil softly; stop the microwave but dont remove the jar.
wait 30 seconds.
start the mic again and when you see it start to boil a second time; shut off mic totally.
let the jar sit in teh mic until cooled; or at least cool enough to remove.
tighten lid once cooled or inject spores immediately.
this whole process takes 10 minutes max; very easy.
just be sterile when you open the lid to inocculate and thats it.
corn syrup is also clear so it is much easier to see teh mycellia growing; and corn syrup has a higher dextrose content.
edit.
plus ive never seen t caramelize like this; whereas honey sometimes does for me. dunno if its my method or teh substance; but thats just my  $.02

Holy shit people; COMMON SENSE! we were all born with it where did it go?
maybe theres a tek out there to explain how to use it!

You might also try buying some Kellogg's All-Bran cereal from your local grocery store (if you live in the U.S.) It has a HIGH malt content.
You can dump some of the cereal in a container and add a double amount of water. The cereal will disintigrate to a mush which sinks, and the top layer of water will become tinted light brown with the malt. Pour off the liquid into a clean jar. Either sterilize with a PC or cover the jar with Saran Wrap and nuke in a microwave at 70% for 5 minutes. Let cool in microwave, then innoculate.
Experiment with different amounts of All-Bran cereal and water until you get the right concentration.
