Stephen Hawking...
...is only famous because he's in a wheelchair. Let's send him into space.

There would only be you and your memories... the choices you've made, and the people you've touched. If this world were to end there would only be you and him and no-one else. " .............. "MAN! You know there aint no such thing as left over crack!"

I read this story yesterday on another forum. Good to see some other minds thinking the same way I do! I wrote this in my blog last year:
Quote:
I have a proposal to make. A goal, if you will, for humans in general and Humans as a species.
Life on Earth is a truly amazing system. It has expanded throughout the atmosphere, surface, and even many kilometers into the crust. Anywhere that Life can life, it does.
However, we do not have any compelling evidence for Life existing beyond this planet. While I personally find this case to be rather improbable (the Universe is a BIG place...plenty of room for Life to get started elsewhere) I must accept the fact that we do not have any proof for extra-terrestrial Life.
This being said, I think we should take it upon ourselves to seed as many planets as possible with Life. We should assume the worst-case scenario: that Life exists on Earth and Earth alone. We cannot, and must not, allow Life to end before it is able to move to other worlds and other solar-systems. We are the first species on Earth with the ability to even think about getting Life to another world, let alone the possibility of actually doing so. We are the first, and we should not let ourselves be the last.
An approachable outline:
1) Create or modify groups of single-celled organisms (mainly bactera/archeobacteria) for adaptation to survival on Mars, and possibly the Moon (though, lacking at atmosphere, Moon life would require a great deal more alteration than Martian life).
2) Seed Mars with these life-forms. It is not necessary to send humans there to do this, as several robotic craft could accomplish the task much quicker, without having to worry about human life-support during the mission.
3) Once Life has established itself on Mars, use the lessons learned to develop other forms of life suitable for other planets/moons in the solar system.
4) Humanity itself should then begin to colonize all habitable bodies in the solar system. Self-modification, both genetic and physiological, can and should be attempted by willing humans to help the process of colonization.
5) Initial Von-Neumann probes should be sent towards chosen candidate systems in an attempt to give Life a home outside this solar system. The initial probes should not be concerned with terraforming for human-occupation, but simply spread Life to as many worlds as possible.
6) Finally, humans will need to leave this solar system to bring intelligent-Life to the stars.
Currently, humans ourselves are the greatest threat to continued Life on Earth. We have the ability to spread Life to the stars, but also the ability to wipe it out before this ever happens. I would consider this proposal a success even if we only ever complete Steps 1 & 2 before facing extinction. At least then Life would not be limited to this world alone.
I say we take the noble road. It is not our personal survival that is most important, but the survival of Life itself.
Let's not let this experiment fail before it gets out of the test tube!
--------------------
Once, men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.
