I wonder what the black stuff/space is made off.

We all know what compounds air is made off. But what are the compounds off space?

Most of interstellar space is literally empty. What little there is is almost entirely (~99%) hydrogen and helium. The last estimate I heard was that interstellar space has about 1 hydrogen atom per cubic centimeter. Here is a short article on the topic.

Here is a nice list of the substances that have been identified.

Space is, for the most part, a vacume. Empty and devoid of matter, aside from the stray hydrogen atom and background radiation.

Purhaps another question to ask: what is a vacume made of?

Your dates on Zwicky are a little off. He was born in 1898 and died in 1974. He certainly was known for being difficult. Apparently he was fond of greeting strangers with the phrase, "who the hell are you?"

Here is a summary of some of the more important stuff he came up with. That page doesn't mention the Catalog of Galaxies and Clusters of Galaxies, which was still one of the best references on the topic around when I was still dabbling in astronomy about 10 years ago.

Even better, without anything else, would you still have a vacuum?

Somewhere, I thought, I read that space is full of endless amounts of waves of energy, just bouncing into each other, all chaotic like.

Actually observations have shown dark matter must exist in order to keep all the Galaxies from falling into each other, Dark matter has a measurable gravitational force, and is widely accepted among the scientific community.

"Somewhere, I thought, I read that space is full of endless amounts of waves of energy, just bouncing into each other, all chaotic like. "

These waves you speak of are called Virtual Particles, they consist of a Negative and Positive particle that do nothing but bounce off each other and cancel each other out they exist everywhere through out space-time.
There existence has been proven by the light that a black hole seems to radiate, what you are actually seeing are the positive Virtual Particles Drifting off into Space, and the Negative Virtual Particle getting sucked into the black hole causing it to decrease in volume yet still maintain a steady increase in density.

It used to be widely accepted that space was full of 'ether' (not the chemical, but some mystical something). We now know that this is false. Show me some dark matter and I will start to accept that it exists. For now it is a nice 'place holder' to help our theories fit together. I am not saying that it might not turn out to exist... but we have to remember that many times what has been accepted as nearly fact turns out to be incorrect.

Dark matter, backround radiation, the singularity, space-time and all those other cosmological terms, yes, it is all almost inconceviable, mind boggeling. The things we , as individuals, will never really know, but interesting all the same. if you have any questions concening these things (ecspecially what is generally accepted among the scientific community) read a book called "wrinkles in time" by George Smoot and the COBE project ( NOT "a wrinkle in time"). Stephen Hawkings called the experiment/discovery as "the most important scientific discovery in the twentieth century" it concerns the previously unexplained heterogeneus distribution of matter in our universe, which was one weakest parts of the "big bang theory; along with a extremely condensed explination of the science of cosmology (good for those people who want to know what the the greatest minds of our time, with the most advanced scientific technology have to say about the subject),(and for all those "but who made it?", "how can you be sure?" questions, and askers, science doesnt claim to be the truth, it atempts to find the truth through the only thing that really makes us human, reason)(the quote says it well) ---1C()/\/
