how to free up space?
    #1719722 - 07/16/03 12:48 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

is there a good way to see which folders are taking up the most space without going in and looking at each one individually?

any other tips for freeing up some gigs?

Do a search on your computer for "cookies".  You'll find a folder thats contatined with a bunch of things you don't need.  You can delete everything in that folder (its all of the little pics you download off of the net, look at a few and you'll see).

Do another search for " *tmp "  whenever you put a * behind a file extension, it will look for every file with that extension.  *tmp files are temporary files.  You can delete all of those too

You can always removed unused programs, and burn things onto CD that you don't "need" on your machine.  Removing programs and burning info onto CD's will free up the most space.

*.cab can be removed also as long as you have a backup on CD.

There's a program named TreeSize. It will show you exactly where all the space on your drive is being used.

edit: the freeware works great:

There are a lot of progs to show where your drive space went. If you are not a techie or don't feel comportable just use the disk cleanup tool from drive propories. This will also compress files that have not been accessed from a while. If you surf a lot temporary internet files start to suck up tons of space.

Cookies don't take up any real space.. you would be best with deleting ALL THE PORN AND MUSIC.

set compression on any folder that you dont use very much. I wouldn't recommend compressing the whole disk, though.

Also, clean out your temp directory. Delete *.tmp as well

Right click folder, Properties, Advanced, there's a checkbox there.

I am not sure if that works in FAT32, it shows up on NTFS on 2k, XP should probably be the same.

Cookies don't take up any real space

This can be a bit misleading. If a user has 1000 cookies, and each cookie is only 32 bytes long, then you would think the space taken is only 32,000 bytes. Most browsers, however, store each cookie as a seperate file in the file system. A single file takes up at least one sector of disk space regardless of the filesize. If your blocking factor used by your OS is large, your 32,000 bytes can easily turn into a million bytes or more. Granted, even 1 meg compared to a typical .mp3 file is next to nothing, but still something to consider.

I have never had a problem with NTFS and compression.

Defragging also gives you a few megabytes sometimes. Also it makes everything go a little smoother.

compressing an entire drive is asking for trouble. compressing individual files or directories has never caused me problems. I do it all the time on high-load production servers.

I just set up to compress files that have not been accessed in a certain amount of time.
