"A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest--a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."

yeah my next system will definately be RAID considering how cheap harddrives are now. I'd do RAID1 though, as I'd really like to have the data protection as well.

Nice set-up, by the way.

You would actually want RAID 0+1, but that is a technicality. If you have the hardware, it would be even better to jump up to RAID 5, assuming you want protection and not speed. Remember, RAID does nothing to protect you from user or program error... it only protects you from single disk hardware failures.

RAID ? Redundant Array of Intelligent/Inexpensive Disks.

RAID 0 = striping
RAID 1 = mirror
RAID 0+1 = striping + mirror
RAID 4 = striping + dedicated parity
RAID 5 = striping + interleaved parity

Or more simply, it's a way to add more IDE connections which allows you to add more HD's (or other IDE devices like a CD-ROM)
When you set it to stripe, you can have more than one HD on your system, and your system treats it as one big HD. For example, Jared's setup (set to stripe) is the equivalent of a 268 Gb HD!
You can also set it to Mirror, which will allow one HD to copy another HD for back up.

RAID0 is easiest to define

You hook up two harddrives, say they're 100 gigs each. The RAID controller makes these drives seem like one logical drive to the computer. When the computer writes to the harddrive, half the write goes to one drive half goes to the other. Because each drive has half as much to write, the write succeeds twice as fast. You have 200 gigs of space still but twice as fast as either 100 gig drive.

Some RAID modes do backup. Say you have two 100 gig drives. The RAID controller could read and write everything to both drives, treating them as one logical 100 gig drive. If one dies, the data is backed up on the second.

More advanced modes do a combination of the two, for increased performance and protection by redundancy. These requires more drives though.

Try IOMeter. Most SMP and SCSI nuts use it to bench. Storagereview uses it for its reviews.

I would be very surprised if your integrated RAID can produce such scores above.

3ware or Promise cards, with a hefty pricetag, could.
