Low Disk Space
    #2472918 - 03/25/04 02:19 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I'm operating on Windows XP, and lately I've been getting warnings that I have low disk space, so I click on that box to clean up my hard drive, but whenever I do, my computer shuts down.  WTF is going on here?

your computer probably doesn't have enough disk space left to perform the clean up, so it shuts down.

the same thing was happening to me every hour or so a while back. i solved the problem by deleting a few unused programs in "add/remove programs" and burned a lot of the music that i had on my hard drive to discs.

my computer runs pretty decently now.

First, empty your Recycle Bin.

Next, close all programs except Internet Explorer.

In Internet Explorer, select 'Tools' move down to 'Internet Options' and select that, select the 'General' tab, in the middle of the General page is 'Temporary Internet Files,' click 'Delete Files,' check the box for 'Delete all offline content,' then click 'OK.' This will clear out your cache. You can also click on 'Delete Cookies' under 'Temporary Internet Files' while you're at it.

Now shut down Internet Explorer.

Now find your 'My Computer' icon and double click on that. Double click on the 'C' drive icon. Double click the 'WINDOWS' folder, double click the 'Temp' folder, pull down the 'Edit' menu and select the option, 'Select All.' Now pull down the 'File' menu and select 'Delete.' Empty your recycle bin again.

This should have freed up a bit of disk space.

Now go to 'Start' -> 'Settings' -> "Control Panel'
double click the 'System' icon. Select the 'System Restore' tab, on that page there is a 'Disk space usage' area, use the slider to reduce the 'Disk space to use' to a more reasonable level, or alternately, you can ckeck the box to 'Turn off System Restore,' then click the 'Apply' button. This should have freed up some more disk space.

Now, go to the 'Start' -> 'Programs' -> 'Administrative Tools' -> 'System Tools' and then select 'Disk Cleanup.' This is the program that starts automatically when you're low on disk space, here you'll see any more stuff that can be cleaned up. Hopefully, you'll now have enough free disk space for this to run without a hitch. If it doesn't, make sure you go to windows update and have all the latest patches installed on your computer and try again.

another side note, if your running Norton Systemworks or similar, a utility is installed to protect deleted items (which is great sometimes and HORIBLE at others). Right click on your Recycle Bin and see if there is an option that says "Empty Norton Protected Files"

That might not be your problem. If your still having space problems, try going into control panel > add or remove programs
delete all the CRAP you dont want anymore or NEVER use.

uhmm...how was evolving's take on the problem different from mine? it seems that we both thought that low disk space was the problem and freeing up some space was the solution.

That sort of threw me too. Perhaps he meant the part about applying patches? All I know is that Windblows is a piece of shit operating system, but I'm stuck using it because everyone else does and it's the standard (albeit a very LOW standard) I have to conform with for doing my work.

Also, delete all your past restore points. Those things take up a surprising amount of disc space!

Just go into "Disk Clean"  and click the "More Options" tab and on the bottom you'll see "System Restore". Just click on that and you're good to go!

Some of you might find this freeware program useful too. It's basically a treemap utility that shows you a pictorial view of which files and directories are taking up space on your HDD.

--------------------
The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame".

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.
