Contamination Rate of Drinking Glasses

If you took all the necesarry sterelity precautions just as you would do with a wide-mouth jar, would the use of drinking glasses be reletively safe if you seal the mouth of the glass with two layers of foil and polyfill for FAE?
Recently I inoculated some glasses with edible mushroom spores, the glass was half full of substrate, relying on the air already trapped inside the glass to help the mycelium grow rather than risking air from outside. Would there be anything wrong with this?

You need gas exchange in the glass to help colonize the substrate. You need vermiculite, polyfil, or tyvek for a contam. barrier and a way to get CO2 out and oxygen in.

How about breathable medical tape covering a small hole on the foil covering the glass?

How about using the drinking glasses for DRINKING and use mason jars with proper filter material and three small holes drilled or punched in the metal lid. Nobody can tell you how to be successful doing the wrong thing. RR

The problem is finding the wide-mouth variety of jars in this country. Just wanted to know if anyone had experience with substituting for drinking glasses in the past and if it woss successful.

I have used drinking glasses in the past but I dont recommend it as they are more prone to contams. But if you have no other choice here is what I did and it worked about 50% of the time.
Filled the glass 2/3 with substrate covered with 2 layers of foil and 2 coffee filters secured them tightly with a couple rubberbands PC'd
To inoculate i just wet the coffee filters with alcohol push the needle through the foil/filter cover and then add a third coffee filter (also damp w/alcohol) on top of the rest.
Good luck

They sure can, at least a few times, the thicker the better. Coffee filters are fairly useless IME, though, except for delicious coffee.

How exactly would you utilise a soda bottle? I can't see how you would manage to dump a cake out of it unless you broke it apart in the bottle and let it pour out; if that is the case how would you break it up?
Plastic food containers is a good idea, I've seen them before but haven't found any details such as how to inoculate them - I assume you should be able to pierce the plastic with the syringe needle and seal the hole with something. I've made 2 liquid culture in the past in plastic containers with good results by dumping spores into them manually.
How did you sterilize containers for substrate use? Do they hold up in a pressure cooker?

the bootle won't work if you using it for cakes, it's mainly to make spawn for bulk, however the plastic container will be your best source. when you look at the container, on the bottom it will be marked with codes like PP, #5, and so on... the one you want will be PP and or #5, these will hold up in the PC...tell me your country location and i can tell you where to get them. now, when you get them you will need to drill some holes on the lids and tape with medical tape.
