Coco Casings

I can't find a tek on this... When using Coco brick for casing, is there a general concensus on whether to add Calcium Carbonate? If so, how much? Do you sterilize it? If so, how - autoclave, ovenbag, microwave, H2O2? Is there a process for getting the correct moisture content? Do you add verm for additional moisture? Etc, etc, etc.

There are several ways to use Coco Coir.

You can use straight Coco Coir....which i do.
I break off a chunk off the brick.....wet it down....let it expand....then i bake it in a pan in the oven for 2 hours at 375 degrees.
I let it cool down.
If i need to add more water.....i do so.
I wash my hands with anti bacterial soap.
Then make up my casing.... I squeeze exesive water out of the Coco Coir.
Make it so it is just damp.....not too wet.

You can mix Coco Coir with other stuff.... just do a search on Coco Coir.
Lots of stuff will pop up.

Another good casing is this one that Anno gave me.
Quote Anno:
"A casing made of 10 parts peat or potting soil, 10 parts vermiculite, 1 part limestome(calcium carbonate) and water, pasteurized in the microwave for 10 minutes, worked very good for me."

And it worked good for me too.

you don't really need it with coco, the main reason for its use is to level out the pH in peat.

I use coco coir and verm 50/50 for my casings and it works great for EQs and Golden teacher, not so good for B+ and Koh Samuis.
This is what I do: take a piece of coco coir from the brick, put it in a bowl, add drinking water, let it expand, and add vermiculite. Put the bowl in the microwaves oven for 3 minutes at max power, let it cool, and case. I never had a problem with it, and had always excellent results.
