2 coco casings gone to hell! need advice
    #584526 - 03/20/02 08:13 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

got 2 coco casing that have done completely nothing. this was the first time that i have used it. i pasturized it; it was the bed a beast product.
both casings had good colonization. then a huge pin set appeared. the pins all were very tiny. i've had only a couple pins get to be about an inch tall then they would turn black and mushy/slimy.
there was a little green mold in certain areas that i scraped out and treated.
1) could i scrap off the whole top layer and maybe case with some vermiculite?
2) what caused the pins not to mature and if they did turn black and crappy?
any ideas? any hope?
if i get a chance i'll try and get a pic of them.
they were brf/verm 1/2 pint jars of equadors and pf hawaiian that colonized with no problems.

I would say throw them out and start over. The pins probably aborted due to lack of air exchange or the mold. Coco is good but you should add oyster shell and/or limestone to it as a buffer, it helps to reduce the risk of contams and also makes for good growth.

or maybe the kind you got had trichoderma (green mold) added to it as some compasnies do that to their coco-coir. use a proven barand such as gro-brick.

Ok why would companies add green mold to their coco-coir?
I've been using Bed-A-Beast for a year now with no problems with green mold

ok first things first
if anyone believes a company would add green mold spores to their growing products; goddamn no comment to that at all.
i mean why on earth would they? cultivate roomfuls of trichodermia just so they can add it or its spores to their growing medium?
*sigh* some ppl. aniiways
first off i would microwaev sterilize it or PC the casing. im pretty sure most teks suggest sterilizing it as pasturization will do nothing for it. you need to KILL the mold so it doesnt grow; whereas you dont sterilize dung or straw cos it naturally already has micro organisms in there to fight the molds and such; whereas coir has nothing of this nature.
>>>1) could i scrap off the whole top layer and maybe case with some vermiculite?
sure you could; youd prolly just get some more mold though. unless you removed all the mold and if you can and not introduce any more mold; youll be fine. not probable though.
>>>2) what caused the pins not to mature and if they did turn black and crappy?
the mold.
>>>the bed a beast didnt list tri....(green mold) as an ingrediant.
HOLY SHIT REALLY! gee i wonder why....
lolololol
peace

Holy shit people; COMMON SENSE! we were all born with it where did it go?
maybe theres a tek out there to explain how to use it!

From: http://www.hort.uconn.edu/ipm/veg/htms/trichoderma.htm

Soil contains many microbes, including beneficial ones that are essential to good crop growth. Recent research has begun to show how to manage the soil microflora to favor the good microbes. One approach has been add some of the best ones to fields in order to create a more favorable soil environment. Most of these introductions fail because the native microflora has the competitive advantage.
One biocontrol fungus has been bred to have the rare but essential property of being able to colonize roots under field conditions. This special strain is called Trichoderma harzianum 1295-22, and is sold under the trade name "T-22." This strain was developed through a 15-year breeding effort led by Prof. Gary Harman at Cornell. Its essential characteristics are a greater ability to colonize roots and a better ability to kill root pathogens.
Vegetable growers can use this biological control agent to reduce the risk of crop loss to stress and root rot. Research in my lab has provided answers about how and when to use T-22. We determined the role of several parameters that growers need to be concerned about, using supersweet corn as a model. We examined application methods, soil types, soil temperature, some other crops, and financial return.
Surprized me too!  :peace:

yeah what he said! i guess some people are to young to remember the early days of coco coir on the shroomery when that paranoia went around about trichoderma.
