Breathing, your always told to concentrate on it but how are you supposed to do it right.

I think I've figured it out and it has helped me alot and made me a much calmer person. I wrote this in another thread so skip it if youve read it. My Chem teacher in high school told me that air wants to rush into your lungs because of air pressure (because I'm lazy i still havnt looked up if this is true or not). so what I've done is only focused on breathing out. and then I let my body do all the work when breathing in. I still havnt cultivated a connection between mind and body and i still get bored sitting around or trying to meditate, but this breathing pattern has helped my thoughts and well being alot. Let me know what you think.

that's a good way i think.... i came across the same thing.

the zen method i am being taught involves doing that but you count to 10 while exhaling.

or if the counting is too fast, 5 or 7.

um.

when going for long slow runs i breathe two steps in and two steps out.
or sometimes for a tempo run ill breathe two steps in and one step out.
but if im sprinting at the end of a long run it's often one step in one step out.

:p

I have found that just.....letting your lungs do their thing.......works well for me.
I am aware of the breath......but not controling it.

Many types of exercise will promote healthy breathing. Cardio workouts, squats, pushups, handstands - whatever's good for the purpose of expanding your rib cage and getting your body flowing.

The articles above are referencing qi gong techniques. There is no huge secret to it. Meditation is basically the same purposeful breathing exercise. Qi gong is different and definitely a great thing to do, but you have to know how. Meditation is something that you can learn without instruction. http://www.shambhala.org/centers/toronto/howmed.html

You might think that just sitting down for a half hour or an hour and meditating wouldn't have a big effect, but it really does.

That first link on Hyperventilation & Health. Was right on target. This is the type of breathing I try to do all the time.

During meditation, I just focus all my attention, on the breath.
Works wonders.
