Weird fucking movie, must have been quite a trip. I sitll get what the point of playing there was if there was no audience to see it.

They just wanted it to be more like a movie I guess. Also, maybe it wasn't possible to get a crowd there and they really wanted to film that location. I don't know, I'm just guessing. I think it's a lot better without a crowd than it would have been with one.

They wanted to do a live film of a  Pink Floyd concert, but every live film of the day would copy the woodstock format- ie. gauging and recording the reaction of the audience to the music being played.
So they did anti-woodstock, a whole concert with no audience

"When planning Live At Pompeii, Adrian Maben had the idea of removing the audience from the concert in a similar manner to Jonathan Demme's work with Talking Heads on Stop Making Sense. Unlike that later film, however, which did at least allow an audience into the venue, Maben took Pink Floyd into a Roman amphitheatre in Pompeii that was deserted but for a few local kids who sneaked in and sat out of the way."

Live at Pompeii is great. The space scences are really cool. And the idea of them playing with no audience rocks.

I didnt care for the Director's Cut, the original concert film is much much better.
