Is too little air exchange the main cause of mutants ?

Is too little air exchange the main cause of mutants ?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but my friend is having this problem. They are doing a single tub with Z strain BRF cakes, and they are starting to fruit, but they are looking pretty odd...huge fat bases with very small caps...and one that is growing what looks like two stems into one cap...WTF ???

They are using polyfil and still fanning every couple of days.

What could be the issue here ?

Thanks !

Sounds like it could be a FAE problem, too much lysol in the air is known to do the same as well (prob. not in your case, but it happens).

No Lysol, but they did take a clean washcloth and wipe the fruiting chamber with rubbing alcohol...and then put the cakes in a couple of hours later.

iso doesn't cause mutants man just petrolium producs, bleach lysol that kinda stuff. FAE is your problem. is also could be just the genetics but since your using a mono tub is leaning towards FAE

Thanks Skeletor,
That's what I told them I thought it was also...but I'm quite new at this also.

So maybe a monotub was not the way to go...they have 10 cakes in it and they are spaced a couple of inches apart and have six 1" holes stuffed with polyfil...So far only two of them have started to show their fruits and one has several mutations and the other has one.

Mayben they should be fanned a couple of time a day ?

Here's a couple of pics so you can see what they are talking about:

These were taken out of the fruiting chamber to photograph.
