N00b hunter, this will be my first year attempting. What species can I expect to find in Michigan. Ranging from southeastern to mideastern to northereastern michigan I have many wooded areas by my house, and a few cow farms. Should I just check for cubes ? what species bruise blue? etc

Cubes(Psilocybe cubensis) don't grow in or anywhere near michigan. They grow in the southeast and gulf coastal region of the U.S., like Fla, GA, Ala, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, etc... And there are 186 or so known psilocybin/cin bearing mushrooms that stain blue, plus a few other, sometimes toxic species that don't contain psilocin and will also stain blue. Do your homework and then some before you think about putting anything in your mouth that you picked. In your area your best bet would be Panaeolus subbalteatus and Psilocybe silvatica, other possibilities would be Psilocybe caerulipes, Psilocybe quebecensis, and maybe Psilocybe semilanceata. LK,

Ok did some reading, so basically my best bet in michigan is to go hunting in the cow fields. I'm not planning on picking / eating right away, not for a few months, just wondernig / getting gerneral ideas on what i can expect

Good luck, I gave up looking here in Michigan. Unless you have alot of pastures and time, then go for it. I have scoured Monroe county for a while, and never had any luck. I found it to be more economical and rewarding to just grow my own. But who knows, your luck may be better than mine! Happy Hunting.

I've had the same problem on this side of michigan...Oakland here. Visited 3-5 cowfarms in my area, but i think the largest was 75 cattle. granted, its a decent size, but they dont shit all that much out in the field...they eat, poo a bit, then go inside for the evening and poo in the hay...they clean it up later. decent success was had with the ones that piled the crap outside, but most of them either had it in direct sunlight or next to the barn....too dry. SO apart fromt the farms not qooperating, this side of michigan gets some wacky weather, such as this current cold snap, which comes at a bad time. Moving over to the Western side of the state, which somehow gets nailed with every storm that drifts this way, and i believe you'd have more undeveloped land, more even weather patterns., and a ton of moisture. over on this side all i've found were P. silvatica, and some sparse patchs at least. Too near detroit to have many hunting places. Pm me sometime, maybe we could combine forces. Stay frosty.

Cow fields and nice wet woods...thats where i see most of the mushroom varieties around here, let alone the psychoactive kind. Look for dung heaps, large stands of pines (or an actual forest, if you're in luck). After we get a few days in a week and a half of warmer rain is when i tend to go hunting...usually once we hit 65-70 the temps rise and the humidity decreases until the fall rains. My best results weren't all that great, as you could expect of my location, but occured after a heavy rain on a day of 65 degrees, then onto a humid 67, a humid 65, then a shower at 69 with two more days of upper 60's lower 70's weather humid with one more storm and a few showers. Hell, the mushrooms in my backyard were in full bloom when i went out, so i figured it was time. Good luck, and wherebouts ya located? Stay frosty.
