From the description the first two sound like some type of boletus. Only reason why i say that is cause you say they have holes instead of gills and look kind of like a sponge. Either way a pic would be great, i'd love to see some native michigan shrooms.

If the photos were visible it would probably help.

As mthree984 stated, the first two sound like boletes. Try to peel a bit of the tube layer from under the cap of one. Boletes have tube layers that can almost always be peeled easily.

What color are the tubes? It's best if we know what color they are in very young specimens as well as mature ones.

Look at the surface of the stem on each and describe it in detail (a picture is worth a thousand words!). Is there a pattern of tiny ridges like a net? Are there tiny, dark colored dots? Does it look sort of hairy with very coarse hairs?

Try scratching the surface of the tubes and see if it changes color. It might become a different color or it might become more intensely the same color or even nothing at all might happen.

On your third mushroom, what color is the stem? Is there a ring on the stem? Is the stem smooth surfaced or are there scales or what? Are the gills attached to the stem (try cutting one in half vertically to tell). Is the cap surface slimy or sticky or dry (if the mushroom has dried out, try wetting your fingertip with water and rubbing the cap to determine this).

The last mushroom sounds like it's probably a Pholiota or Galerina, but there are lots of possibilities.

Happy mushrooming!

I agree with the others about the first two.

The third appears to be of the genus Pluteus. If the gills are not attached to the stem, and it drops pink spores this will be confirmed. The pink spores will often make the gills change from white to pink. I have not been able to ID brown/gray capped Pluteus specimens to species; they all look pretty much the same to me.

It's an interesting first find however, because some species of Pluteus are reported to be active. All grow on wood, and from what I understand the active ones are very small. I found a very old one last year that had deep midnight-blue coloration at the base of the stem. It was pretty much completely eaten by bugs, so I just left it there. I did smell it, and I noted that it smelled very similar to P. cubensis. This year I found two more with the same smell, but they showed no bluing.

The active Pluteii are supposedly very rare, but I'm sure I've found at least one of them. If your looking for a trip, then don't waste your time with them, but if your all about the hunt, then Pluteus is a challenging quarry.

Peace
