Sterility check?!?! How bout that FUNKY smell!?
    #560304 - 02/22/02 11:57 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

Ok....

My Jerry Only action figure has been colonizing jars for a while now, and he noticed that very often when he gets contam there is a funky ass "Fermentation" type smell. He noticed that this may be dependant on the substrate... but it differs dramatically from the wonderfull smell of healthy mycilium. Recently Jerry decided to try using spawn bags... he noticed that the filterpatch provided an interesting "window" into the bag via smell. He noticed each of the bags smelling very different through the filterpatches. Each substrate seemed to have its own flavor. One thing he noticed however, was that some of the bags, while showing no signs of contamination seemed to have a slight hint of that wonderfully putrid fermentation smell, while others smelled like "mice ill yum."

He asked me to ask you all.... Is this something that can be used to help identify contam? Is there a reason to worry if there are no visible signs of contam?

My initial response was that it seemed as though some substrates might "ferment" without any contam... is that possible? Is this smelll normal... hit me back with your oppinions/experiences! Thanks.

Fermenting IS contamination.

Bacterial contamination is often not clearly visible from outside, but clearly "smellable".

Let it fully colonize...it will take longer, but sometimes, the mycelium will win.

And if the mycilium wins and the cake is fully colonized then the fruits should be safe for digestion?

Yes. You should get The Mushroom Cultivator. Stamets himself says that contaminated substrate can still be used to salvage fruits.

FOAF got that same nasty smell, but dont know which jars are making it . Hes too lazy to find out. Do the bacteria contam make airborne spores? I dont think they do...

Sorry this is a little off topic: Despite the talk about warnings for eating contaminated mushrooms. I had tried 2 grams of contaminated shrooms. The trip was errie from the beginning but after 10 minutes I was fine. What the hell was all that about?

Becarfeul about what you ingest, these babies look standard but they could have something bad inside as well.

Errieness was very odd. I can't describe it, but its a lot worse then a very bad trip on acid. From my experience.

When u say contaminated mushrooms.. you mean the mushrooms themselves were contam.. or the substrate they grew off?

The casing had a about 2 inches of green mold. It was on there for about 2 days. Fruits were still growing, and possible been sucking up the contamination as well. I should just throw out the shrooms, or give them to enemies! hehe
