Vipassana by SN Goenka

I was scouting around looking for meditation retreats for this summer. I have been feeling a little low for a couple of years and meditation has helped me in the past. I was looking for something disciplined and longer than a weekend, just to kick start my practice again really. I found a few sites about Vipassana taught by SN Goenka, the courses are ten days and require no talking and no outside world contact. Best of all the courses are free! but then I kept noticing Goenka's name all over the literature, no other meditation retreat sites had such egocentric promotion of their leader, I smelled a rat. I did some snooping and found this site Vipassana I just wondered if any of you had attended one of these retreats, if so what is your take on their teaching style?

I have never done retreats
my cousin did vipassana in thailand in the forest as a retreat for about 6 months during a 3 year session in the east as a monk.
when he returned he taught me several different techniques, none of which required money or isolation.
the simplest is best.

beginning middle end.
following the breath in and out.

take a break after 40 minutes.
don't take phenomena seriously
use mindfulness
the meditation is accessible
the personalities are extra.
you do not need anything extra.

I like extra on mine.

I have a few friends who do these retreats every year in the redwoods of northern calif. They really like them mucho.

But 10 days! I would have to face myself. ouch. I think I'll go to the spa instead.

My sister did a free 10 day retreat like this in Japan, it was also Vipassana meditation. They feed you every day and they ask for any donation at the end (you could pay nothing theoretically). She said it changed her life, i'd say go for it :smile:

If a person wanted to find out what all this fuss about meditation was all about, how would you go about explaining all about it.
