Retreat centers?
    #6036857 -

Hey, I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of some retreat centers for long (1+ month) solitary retreats?  They do not have to be of any particular denomination, just somewhere I can go chill out for a while

 Peace

I haven't researched this thoroughly but if I had to choose one today I would likely go here: Zen Mountain Center

It was started by Shunryu Suzuki who is the author of a book or two on Zen Buddhism. They have a few different options available at different times of the year.

Basically, I want to be on my own for a period of time.  A lot of these Zen center retreats put you in the midst of there training schedule.  I am already training regularly at a zen monastery so I would like a break from that as well.  I was thinking of just heading off into the forest for a couple months.  Where are some good locations that I can do this?  Everywhere I know of gets damn cold, and is a breeding ground for wolves and mountain lions.  I hear some of the larger national parks are great for this.  Any thoughts?

I think about doing something like that every morning as I get out of bed and stare out my window at the sterile suburbia which surrounds me.

If you do find a suitable place, what will you do?  Will you live out of a tent, or do you want to find a cabin or something?  What will you do for food?  In the event of a medical emergency?

Good luck!

at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Pacific Crest Trail. Start in Southern CA and head north. When it gets too cold for you turn around.

go to eugene oregon and live on the streets. it will be an experience of a lifetime, i actually plan on doing it someday hopefully soon.

i tried living at a retreat center, it worked for 2 weeks then i lived on the streets in north carolina. living on the streets gave me a more fufilling/enlightening experience then the retreat center.

I've heard alot about Eugene, OR. What's the specific appeal of bummin' there, is there a whole scene?

I plan on treating it like a native vision quest, using only what nature provides.  So no tent, no cabin, maybe a grass-brick house if I can find a suitable field.  I would also like to take some survival courses so I have some basic idea of what to do.

But I think a retreat center would be good first.  I want to get away from people for the duration of time and a retreat center seems the easiest way to do so.  Oh, and when I say retreat center, I mean more along the lines of an isolated hermitage.  No schedules, no people, no teachers, just me and the elements... Faced from within a small cabin with a wood stove

www.clik.to/essene or search "essene"

There is more than one sanctuary opportunity (different groups). Some are different than others.

Definitely looks nice.  Do you know if they offer solo retreats?  Everything I see on the website is in a group context.

Shunryu Suzuki wrote,  Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind. One of the better books on Zen.

<<Where are some good locations that I can do this? Everywhere I know of gets damn cold,>>
Way South, Florida & etc. but you will have a different sort of natural hazard and there are definate benefits to living in a variable climate. Bugs for one.

<< and is a breeding ground for wolves and mountain lions.>>
LOL! You will have natural hazards wherever you go and it is easier to learn cohabitation than one might think. Someone used to it can be very helpful.

<< I hear some of the larger national parks are great for this.>>
Sure if you wish to be stalked like prey, murdered and robbed. The Nat Park Scene in most places is less cool than it used to be unless you have good wilderness skills already, and expect them to be challenged. IMHO the campgrounds and surrounding are less than safe and you'd be better off with the lions and bears.

Also:
<<If you do find a suitable place, what will you do? Will you live out of a tent, or do you want to find a cabin or something?>>
You may start in a tent but will soon want to strengthen it or build a hut. Again not too hard and someone already used to it can be helpful.

<< What will you do for food?>>
A benefit of being within 9-10 miles of some type of outpost or town being that no matter what you can always walk out in any weather if you had to.

<< In the event of a medical emergency?>>
That is a good one. We have that here, but I'd be sure to check immediate help and services whereever I went because they are sometimes non-existant.
