Red-tinted cakes?
    #558444 - 02/21/02 10:56 AM (23 years, 1 month ago)

OK, so here is the situation:
My first batch of mushies is going great, and everything is just peachy. I innaculated a second batch with the same spores, but this time I left the substrate a little looser (less packed), and the substrate may have consisted of a little different frequency of brown rice flower to vermiculite due to the fact I just eyed the measurements. This second batch was started about a week or two later than the first, and brought up with the first batch. Now comes the weird stuff. The mycelium on the second bacth has a slightly red tint. It is not just one or two, but every single one is identical. It is very faint but definately present, and the color is even throughout, not splotchy or anything. The second batch was innauculated with three different syringes, two that had all been previously used and stored, and one new. Like I said, this batch was kept with the first batch for a long while, and none of the first ones have shown any sign of the "red tint". I decided to quarantine the second batch about a week ago (it was started about 3 weeks to a month ago), and I have just been keeping an eye on them. I do not detect any noticable odor or anything like that. Could this be contamination? Help my babies!

It might be lipstick mold ... :frown: Search the contamination board for it, and see if it looks like your stuff.

I cannot find any pics of the lipstick mold. Where might they be?

Well, I have some very good news. What I have is most definately not lipstick mold. I was looking at the mycelium, and it seems that as it ages some of the red tint almost dissappears. It really doesn't look anything like mold, but it is definately different than the other cakes I have going. I am hoping things will just clear up, and I am going to keep a close eye on them. Thanks for the help thus far guys!

I am not sure what the effect of lipstick mold is...

I checked my kids this morning, and it seems that everything is moving along very nicely. They continue to colonize fairly quickly, and the red tint has been fading as the days go by. Come on booms!

Sad News! Today I looked at the jars, and they were looking somewhat dried out, and there had been very little growth in the past few days. I caught an aweful smell coming from one of the jars, and upon further investigation, found that all the jars stunk.

Poor little guys!  :frown:

They have since been tossed...

On the brighter side of things, the first group are doing very well! The PF's have begun to fruit, along with one hawiian. The mazatecs are still waiting to pin...
