Touching Cakes?

HI, I've always read not to touch the cakes since shrooms won't grow where the cake has been touch. Is this because of the pressure, something on my hand, etc? I seem to have to touch the cake to harvest the first flush and then I never get a second flush, just a bluish cake and lots of little aborts.

Any suggestions? Or should I just chuck the cakes after the first flush and go with new cakes?

I think you should try rehydrating the cake somehow. You could try dunking (submerging the cake in water for a few hours), use a double ended casing tek and spraying the casings with water - or use Hippie's voodoo tek and inject water into the holes every now and then.

Thats weird, Janelle. A few weeks ago I found one of my cakes had green mold, it was just beginning incubation. It looked like it was only at the top, so I took the cake out and grabbed a huge kitchen knife. I laid the cake on the counter and in one chop I cut about an inch of the cake off. I quarantined this cake from the rest, but let it incubate for a few days until the mycellium had fully colonized the "new" top. I got a great first flush out of it, with mushrooms mostly coming out of the top! Its now on its second flush, and producing nice pins.

The moral of that story is, you can touch your cakes if your not dirty.
