BRF VERM in quart jars
    #557507 - 02/20/02 10:55 PM (20 years, 9 months ago)

Well, i was wondering if i can maybe put brf and verm loosely inside the quart jars and just do them as if i was doing rye berries. So basically i'm gonna mix 1 cup brf 1 cup water and 2 2/3 cup verm loosely in 1 qaurt jar. Now this is from the pf tek using 1/4 brf 1/4 water 2/3 verm to 1 1/2pint jar, alls i did was convert everything from 1 1/2pint to 1 quart jar. 1 qt = 2 pints so thats
1 qt = 4 1/2pints, so basically it takes 4 1/2pint jars of substrate to fill 1 qt jar of substrate. Now if this conversion fills the jars to the top i'm then gonna cut the mix in half, if it doesn't fill the jars then i'ma just leave them as is. I'm topping my jars with MM discs, then PCing at 15 psi for an hour, after sterlization and cooling i'm gonna inject 2cc's thru the middle of the MM disc and into the substrate. Lastly i'm gonna shake like hell to mix the spores up, then place it in my incubator to let them finish colonization. what u think think it'll work or shouldn't i even try it, basically i want loose mix of brf and verm inside qaurt jars so i can just pour it into my casing tray like rye berries. feedback plzzzzzzzzzzz

If it does colonize fully, which I see no reason why not, unless your using PF race which may start pinning invitro prior to total colonization.

However, with rye berries, when 100% is reached, they can be shaken loose inside the jar to individual berries to allow for pouring, however, the PF mix may not be able to be shaken to individual "fragments" suitable for pouring.

Try it and see.... whats the worst that could happen?

You shake "grains'.... whole grains...rye berries.wheat berries etc. afer PCing to loosen them and after the spores germinate to spread the mycelia faster.I wouldn`t shake BRF/verm mix... if you do you will no longer have a "loose" mixture....but one solid mass of flour/verm that will be close to impossible for the myc to grow

When the subsrate colonizes %100 it will never "pour" out.. you will have to free it upside down out of there and then crumble into small pieces and then pour into a casing tray.Cakes will never "pour" out ....quart size or 1/2 pints they still become one fairly solid mass or clump when they are colonized. It`s "birthing a cake"....they don't pour

I wouldn't try it in a full quart jar. It'll take a long time to colonize and is liable to fruit (not just pin) in vitro.

Of course, you could just put a smaller cake in it. Still a pain. Quarts have a small neck. Half-pints and some pints have a tapered shape that allows the cake to be ejected in one piece.
