Soul?

The other day I was having a conversation with a DJ friend of mine about electronic music. Now, this guy is a big househead, whereas I'm more of a drum and bass fan. When I asked this guy why he prefers house to DnB, he said "DnB's got no soul, man".
I have also seen this word used on the boards a lot, specifically in a musical context. Could anyone please define this word 'soul' when it comes to music?
In my opinion, soul is that intangible quality that makes the music I listen to better than the music you listen to- in other words, its just a buzz word with no meaning, used by musical elitists.
My friend still insists that drum and bass has no soul, but I just think he's not looking hard enough. Or maybe its just a perspective thing. The music that strikes a chord deep inside me might not affect you at all, and vice versa. But anyway, just because you can't see the soul in something, doesn't mean it isn't there.

House music is more warm and open then dnb. While there are soulful sides to dnb, and even some trancey sides to it, it's mainly a very agressive style of music. The samples, speed, sounds, and drumbeats are specifically used to incite panic and fear in a crowd. The noises affect ones fight or flight response, one can feel literally assaulted by the sounds of dnb.
House music tends to use more organic sounding samples. It often includes female or male R+B type vocals, slower BPM's, and other types of relaxing sounds. This style of music tends to promote a warmer atmosphere since it's less agressive on the ears and mind.
Your friend was bastardizing an old house track sample.
"House music, its a body thing, a spiritual thing, a soul thing"
House music was created in detroit, its name is derived from warehouse music. Most of the original producers and vocalists were black, these black men fused in the styles of music they grew up around. This music was mainly soul, R+B, motown, etc.
Does DnB have more soul then house (or vice versa)? I would say no, i think all music has soul, has feeling. The person who made that track poured their heart into the beats and production. To me that's soul, when the music you make/listen to is a direct representation of your own personal being. When you start making cookie cutter, crap ass sounding, boring music like darude's "sandstorm", your music lacks soul and is just filler in a set.
I cut my teeth on DnB, i grew up in the DnB captial of the states, but i have to be in the right mood to really rock out to it. House music is a lot easier for me to listen to on a daily basis, it just jives with my ears and body better. Im able to relax with house music instead of feeling like i have to run around in circles while listening to dnb. But, if i was forced to really choose between the two, i wouldnt be able to. I love both style dearly

SOul refers to music with heartfelt feelings, in it, or it evokes strong emotion. I think DnB has a helluva lot more feeling than any house crap. I mean, the only way that people could claim that house has soul, is when the chick is singing.

Blissed beat me too it.
Soul to me is a warm tingly feeling deep in me AKA strong emotion to some or any kind of music that just clicks with me.

yeah, I guess I can understand how house could be thought to have 'soul' because its warm and friendly.... Drum and Bass, to the untrained musical palette, probably sounds cold and sterile in comparison.
but hey, some people have cold darkness in their souls, and can't stand the sugary sweetness of disco house. Those people could just as easily argue that house is basically soulless disco music.
what really grinds my gears is when people use the word 'soulful' when talking about guitar playing. Last night in another thread, someone said something like "Satriani is technically a good guitar player, but his playing lacks soul" WTF is that supposed to mean? I don't get it. Just because someone's playing style isn't to a person's taste, they say that it has no soul? That's pretty fuckin harsh, if you ask me. Is there some musical definition of the word 'soul' that I'm missing here?
I love neoclassical shred music, and I think it has just as much 'soul' as any other style.

DnB has far more soul than house. I think this is a case of house lover's elitism.

that's a pretty hypocritical statement. One could say that you have a case of dnb elitism.
When dnb dj's become original again ill get excited about the music enough to go see them play. But paying money to hear the headliners play pretty much the same set of promo's, whites, and smashers gets pretty boring. Anyone remember when the 9 came out? Id hear that track 15 times in one fucking night.
