Spring Gymnopilus??
    #554707 - 02/17/02 06:43 PM (21 years, 9 months ago)

Found these the other day growing clustered all over a few very rotted trees. I think they may be some type of Gymnopilus but am not sure. They look like a Gym but they definitely aren't big laughing Gyms, the caps were anywhere from 1" to 3" in dia, not very big. The gills bruised dark orange reddish where touched and they dropped rusty orange prints. Any idea??

I would have taken more and better pictures of better specimens but the batteries died in my digital :frown:

BTW: Sorry for my absence around here. My computer took a major shit and as busy as I've been lately with work it took me a month to get it running and back online again.

Yay! You're back! I was thinking you just kinda laid low for the winter season and you'd pop back up in the spring.
As far as the shroom goes... don't ask me :P

We found some very "Gymesque" shrooms growing out of soil when it was in the lower 30s during the day(20s at night) i wanted to post pics but never got around to it. Thats my story.

Peace out,
-Gumby

I know you found it on wood, but those remind me of the spring agrocybe (Agrocybe praecox).

As always, I could be wrong.

peace,

Yeah, I considered the spring agrocybe, but the print is more orange than brown and the veil remnants are more fibrilose than membranous, still a possibility I guess.

I know it's not one, but the top pic looks kinda like a Galerina.
Dunno, but I wouldn't rule out Gymnopilus. There aren't too many rusty-colored-spore creating mushrooms of that size.
And well, I've searched through all of my books and don't see this one.
It may very well be Gymnopilus. Pholiota?
Anyhow, I'm stumped.
Glad to see your face again, Lizard King.
Stay cool!-Levi7.

"veil remnants are more fibrilose"

That's a characteristic of Cortinariaceae familiy.
I bet that is a Cortinarius species.

That is true. I took a look at my books and I haven't found any cortinarius growing on wood...
