British Spring Finds, ID Help Please : )
    #5686803 - 05/29/06 02:42 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I'll start with this one.
Im pretty sure is the Saint George's Mushroom 'Calocybe gambosa'.
It has that very mealy smell, this is the first time ive seen one though.
Im wanting to eat it soon so please tell me if you think its not .

These are the ones im not sure about at all.

They look abit like your average bought shrooms.

Habitat - Growing in grass, with a river running near by. They seemed to be growing along the bank close to the river. Didn't find any further away from the bank.

Cap - dome shaped, flattening out with age. Tan coloured, almost white where the outer skin has cracked.

Gills - Not attached to stem, beige coloured.

Stem - hollow at the very centre, fibrous.

Spore print - Starting to look light purple, not properly finished yet though.

Smell - very fishy

Pics :

Thank you for any help, im wondering if these last ones are edible too.

Thanks !

I think it probably is.....it sure looks like em but theres not a whole lot of distinguishing features with Gambosa from many other Tricholomas I've seen over the years (noticed alot of Gambosa seem to have that little hole in the top center of cap sometimes)and their distinctive smell is something that can be somewhat subjective as there are MANY similiar looking white Tricholomas

one thing that pops to mind is possibly the one of the two large FUNGUS GROUPS (the Mid Yorkshire and East Yorkshire Fungus Groups if memory serves)in the York area probably have regular meetings and outings which I have posted links to in the past and have good web sites with events posted, finds on recent forays and even some boards.....might be worth a haul with your prize maybe someone could help in person and once youve seen one for sure in hand is much easier once you encounter more.....and those clubs will actually take you to the shrooms like Amatoxins own private patches and show you right where there at.....

Your other shrooms are Agrocybe praecox group but not recommended because too much room for confusion with similiar looking deadly mushrooms(like by me maybe).....

EDIT: just took a look for fun at their sites and looks like spring activities are over and things dont get into swing for a couple months there like here until fall but they have an upcoming meeting
in a little over a week for this club in Leeds probably 100 miles away......

Leeds is only down the road from me. I should have a car by autumn so i'll be much more mobile and active then.

I'll look into it though because its got to be a good way to learn the basics.

Thanks again for your time
