I actually read about Cyan's affinity for Eucalyptus before I moved to the Bay Area, when I was still in San Diego about 2 or 3 years ago. My first season here in 2007 I found Cyans growing under/on Eucalyptus litter. Since then I have found both Cyans and Friscosas in wood chips underneath pure stands of Eucalyptus, and happily colonizing the leaf and cone litter.
The last Psilocybe I was finding this year in February and March were Cyans growing in San Francisco in a Eucalyptus grove without woodchips underneath. I wasn't even looking for them, I was just strolling through and noticed these completely blue, weathered, little mushrooms. It was pretty awesome, they were fruiting from the Eucalyptus litter alone, shaded by thick grasses.
If not for P. subaeruginosa and its love of Eucalyptus, then I too would be very surprised by these Psilocybe species association with such a volatile wood. What is certainly more surprising is finding them growing under and on redwood debri!

I've seen that too, but I think the redwood habitat is a little deceptive. I don't think they like redwood as much as they like eucalyptus
whenever I've found cyans in redwood, it's usually a planted landscape area with redwoods, but there's other types of chips underneath, and there will be redwood leaves on the surface, so it looks like redwood, but it's not
eucalyptus, however is different. I've seen cyans growing directly out of eucalyptus bulbs, the seeds
as far as I can tell, eucalyptus is about the only aromatic so far that cyans have adapted to
