Yeah, every mushroom hunter has had that happen.... Come home exhausted from a hunt and too tired to sort through your mushrooms, so you wait a day and they're all gross.
Don't got too bummed, it is really early in the season. Give it another few weeks and hunting will be way better.

Hahaha, I was just telling someone the other day about how all good mushroom hunters I've met have left bags of mushrooms to rot out of exhaustion or forgetting, and then used the example of the one time we were discussing the situation on instant message and you were like "In fact, I have a bag of those Gyms sitting right here next to my desk starting to rot."

wow!! A great start to the season. Its still early but I found more than I expected. I met up with Smily and showed him how it was done. He actually walked right by a huge patch of friscosas but he didnt think they were the real deal. I saw the patch later and pointed at it from 20 feet away and said there are some. Once you have the eye for them they just jump out at you. Btw, I know I need a new digital camera. Its starting to take bad pics
Here are some pics The ones close to home
Some cyans
Unknowns
Red ones
The ones smily passed up with a cap moved to show the spores. I am sure he will be online soon to tell us about them
I do not know
Baby Honey
???
More cyans

Yeah, it's started. I checked on my patches today and one is fruiting. I'd upload the pics, but I've maxed out my space here.

Civ, I told you my phone is out of battery and I haven't had a chance to go to Marin and get the charger. You don't need to be mean. The season has just started, what's the rush?
Tahoe, sorry I didn't meet up with ya, I think I might be coming down with something. Alan and I thoroughly scouted the place you and Smily went to find those Friscosas just last weekend and we didn't see a single pin. I'm glad to see they have started to come up since then!
The "brain mushroom" as Smily described, is Phaeolus schweinitzii.
The ones that look like brown Oysters are Hohenbuehelia petaloides.

eh humboldt is a bit out of reach from the bay area, the bay area always fires it up first...

Rad. Alan and I are going to Salt Point on the 8th for the Bay Area Mycological Society foray. I can't wait to see what's coming up about a week before the foray. That place has been killer hunting grounds for me in the past. Good luck!

Is there a joining fee or anything of that sort to go? I would love to go with a group of people who actually have a clue as to what they are doing, as opposed to me wandering aimlessly trying to find pine trees. But for the last 3 days I've been under the spell of mushroom fever, I cant stop thinking of places to go look at.

Its going to be great for edibles, everyone from CA should go.
There are not many edibles up yet because it has been very dry and just recently rained a lot. I went looking for mushrooms today and got completely soaked and found a handfull of pan foes, some Bolbitius, some Agaricus xanthodermus, and Conocybe filaris. Half the Psilocybe patches I checked are fruiting well.
Here are some Psilocybe cyanescens from San Francisco today:
