mixing strains * 1

Is it ok to mix different strains? Its possible that i mixed up my jars from the labels and i just spawned? them to horsepoop. If i have 2 or 3 strains mixed together will there be a problem?

Accoring to some they will fight and it will be detrimental, accoring to other it wont matter and youd be hard pressed to tell the difference.

The first is the common consensus, the second is a statement from RogerRabbit that came up in a thread just a week or two ago...

Take from that what you will,

they won't kill each other but dont' do it. remember a multispore inconulations is many strains in fact. but having several on one casing you won't know what is what. so its useless for printing if you care to keep track of what you are growing.

just do a few smaller casings.

I seriously doubt you'll notice any difference.  A multispore inoculation results in thousands of strains.  It really doesn't matter if some of those come from different prints with different names or not, since they're the same species.  Of topic sort of, but one of my best pinsets ever was when I deliberately mixed pans and cubes in the same jar.  Not just the same tray, but two different species in the very same grain jar.  Even shook the jar twice to mix them all up, and when it pinned, there were pan areas and cube areas, but EVERY square inch of the casing layer had half a dozen pins of one kind or the other.

I've just found the old adage of 'they'll fight with each other' to be incorrect.

wow.. did you try to reproduce this and check it out?

maybe they're more motivated to pin/fruit when another spicies is around?

I have also experimented in this and my grow went just fine. I used

the pf tek and inoculated jars with several different types of

'strains' it was a while ago but I do remember that I used b+ and

amazonian there was a third but I forgot it. For scientific

information I will quote

The Mushroom Cultivator

"Two dikaryotik mycelial networks can also gro together, exchange genetic material and form a new strain. Such an encounter, where two hyphal systems fuse, is known as anastomosis. When two incompatible colonies of mycelia meet, a zone of inhibited growth frequently forms. On agar media, this zone of incompatibility is visible to the unaided eye."

Now correct me if I'm wrong but in ANY multi spore inoculation

there are many different strains so this process will happen

regardless if you mix different syringes or just use one.

as for RR's pan/cube casing maybe they're way of fighting is to see who can produce the most spores thereby repoducing more. this woudl mean creating fruits. id assume being different species they wouldnt' share teh myc network and therefor treat each other as competitors. of the scare recourse of nutients. once the jar was grown out they took sides and the all they could do waas build up and reproduce. something like what happends with playing teh board game ricks with a bunch of pussies who never attack and just sitting ther building up.
damn you risk!

To a certain extent, yes. They may fuse, and they may remain separate and fruit separate. When unlike mycelium are placed together on a petri dish, this can be observed. As Paul said, a line of inhibited growth forms between the two strains. This can be observed below. Both of these growths originated from the same sporeprint, but were isolated down to single sector isolated strains. These two isolates are not compatible, therefore a line of separation has formed between them.

Other times, after the zone of isolation has formed, a distinct third growth will emerge from it. This third growth as shown below emerging from the 12 o'clock position is a hybrid of the two mycelium, and is usually more vigorous than either parent.

When spores germinate and then pair up with compatable hyphae to form multiple strains that then fuse by anastomosis, the results can be seen in the picture below. The single sector at the bottom of the growth is steadly becoming more of the total as it assimilates the other strains into its network. If allowed to grow, it might have consolidated the entire dish into one strain or it may have ran up against an incompatible strain as seen in the pics above and stopped.

Holding a petri dish up to light and looking at it from the agar side is a good way to see the line of inihibition between the strains.
