Half a tespoon is too little for sure. In theory one should add 2/3 hydrated lime compared to the amount of limestone(calcium carbonate) needed. The problem is that you have to add exactly the right amount if you use hydrated lime. If you add too much, the pH will go towards 13. If you use limestone, the pH can?t go above 8, despite the amount used.

well maybe ill just skip the hydrated lime then, that is untill I can get some litmus paper to measure the PH. Is peat, verm and oystershell good enuf? should do the job right?

It should. But you can add a few teaspoons of hydrated lime with no problems.

yeah, it wont be the perfect recipe but at least ill have some acidity to ward off contams a little bit. Think I need to add more water if i pc it for an hour to make up for any water loss in that heat?

No, since in the pressure cooker the inside is full of steam which hardly allows for any evaporation from the thing you are pressure cooking. And if it WOULD dry out, you can allways spray the casing layer after applying it.

man this sucks, i just ran out of vermiculite:( Now I have to do it all tommorow. Thats goo cuz I can study some more. Oh yeah, and its been 2 days since my halfpint brf's have been covered in nice white, would it be wise to say that theyre probably 95-100% colonised? And if you see the white pull away from the glass, does that mean theyere loosing too much water? Hope not!!!!

>would it be wise to say that theyre probably 95-100% colonised? Yes. Give them 2 more days. > And if you see the white pull away from the glass, does that mean theyere loosing too much water? The substrate shrinks since it?s converted to CO2, energy and water, so this is a perefectly normal condition.

your talking about limestone, hydrated lime is what im worried about. By the way, I did do a batch of casing using the recipe I posted at the top of this thread, I used 1 tbsp of lime but the PH still ran to about 8. Next time Ill use half the lime.

pH of 8 is not too bad, it will fall a bit before the mycelium reaches the surface. Anyway, now you see where the problem is with hydrated lime. Measuring the pH of the casing mix is absolutely necessary if you use hydrated lime.

Oh really? 8 isnt that bad? Oh well, throwing out that whole batch of casing will only cost me less than a dollar. I thought it had to be 6-7 or Id be screwed. The next batch of casing ive made has no hydrated lime, but 95% of the other teks out there dont use it and do well, so im not too worried about it.

According to The Mushroom Cultivator "The casing should be balanced to an initial pH of 6.8-7.2.". I?ve experienced that up 8 works without problems. http://www.fungifun.org/GROWTH_PARAMETERS.htm
