What was up with yesterday's Family Guy
    #5500298 - 04/10/06 03:51 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Lois and Peter got stoned so they could write a song and it made them act excessively stupider than probably any stoner could be...

but then again given the context that it was their first time being high in years and they smoked back a few Js each that's understandable....

it was kind of funny... but then at the end Chris came in and lectured them, he said something like
The fact is, mom and dad, the active ingredient of marijuana is THC, a mild form of acid. It destroys the central nervous system, renders you impotent.....

and he just goes off spouting complete untruth in a casual voice.

It basically showed them tripping level 4, their surroundings melting into a fantasy candy land and stuff.......

I mean if they're going to slander a drug, even as a joke, why not alcohol? Yes weed can kill creativity but it can also do worlds of good for creativity, it depends on how much you use it.

I mean before I abused weed I got to the point where I could write songs in my mind and HEAR THEM PLAYING audibly. Now tell me that's bad for creativity? Well no, but smoking it a lot more instead of working on making that ability permanent.... is bad for it.

No. I thought it was a documentary about a family that does random things that don't make sense.

you do realize some people, in fact many people, will probably take some of what he said about THC seriously?

i know it was sarcasm but its kind of dangerous in these times where legalization is on the rise. they could have had someone say "what the hell, that's bullshit!"
or "Chris, you need to stop watching those above the influence commercials."

I picked up on that shit, too.
My wife and I were watching the show, and I said, " That totally looks like acid. If that's from weed, we need to get some of that!!"
She agreed.
Later, when Chris said the part about thc being a mild form of acid, I said Bullshit!!
Although it IS classified as a hallucinogenic, I have never seen the " candyland" effects from weed as portrayed.
That being said, we both thought the show was pretty cool.
Peace

critical thinking and cartoon watching are probably negatively correlated.

i bet a bunch of stoned people were like "dude, wtf" even..... how many stoners even know much about THC? I know I don't, just enough to know that that was BS.

there's no need to be hostile though.

I thought that the episode was okay until the propaganda part at the end. I picked up on the sarcasm, how Chris was just spouting the facts when he is usually mildly retarded, but many people probably didn't. And I agree, it is dangerous talking about it like that, as most people don't care enough to look up the real information for themselves.

Anyone with a little bit of knowledge would realize that their portrayal of weed was a joke. It was a joke about how the drug is often exagerrated, and it was a joke about the ridiculous myths surrounding it.

Are some people so thick that they won't get the joke, and believe that this is an accurate representation of marijuana use? Yes, there probably are some idiots out there. But it's not the responsibility of writers on a TV show to censor themselves to prevent idiots from being confused.

Demanding that everyone who writes for television use the forum they have to promote your viewpoints on drugs is no less facist than demanding that everyone on television promote a totally anti-drug standpoint.

Some people only seem to be opposed to censorship and control of the media when they disagree with the message being presented. If they don't completely agree with the message, then demanding that it be changed doesn't count as censorship, for some damn reason.

I guess I straddle the fence on this, while I agree that we shouldnt censor any kind of artwork, I always kinda held family guy up to higher standards when it came to educating the public on such topics, because even if it is a comedy they tackle some pretty serious ideas, but hey different strokes for different folks...

This is again, assuming that is something doesn't follow your point of view perfectly, that it's doing something wrong.

There are also a lot of people who act like pot is the most wonderful thing in the world and that it is the most magical miracle ever laid onto the earth. This is just as silly and over the top as the opposing view.

Also, sometimes satire has more impact when it's presented in a less obvious manner. Like showing how silly perceptions about drugs are by mocking those perceptions with an exagerrated, over the top presentation of them.

it is coincidental that south park says family guys is a bunch of random jokes... which it usually is... except for the most recent episode

Guys, it's a cartoon, nothing on the show is taken seriously EVER, that's the point of the show. I don't get it, they should continue to make everything in the show a joke, however if there's marijuana involved in an episode, they should change the tone to make it portray an accurate representation of the drug they're talking about? Come on man, don't be foolish, it's a joke and it's funny to see someone acting totally ridiculous in saying that you shouldn't smoke weed.

Besides, will someone say, with all honesty, I learned these facts about marijuana from family guy?

I think he was complaining about the episode in a good way. Marijuana legalization is on the rise and we need all the good advertisement we can get. Then on the other hand we've got one of the most worshiped shows regarding open mindedness somewhat bashing it.

I see where your coming from. Thats why I like south park. They make the government look bad...not the other way around.

Well that post was meant to be over the top, but seriously the show was being humorous. Lets not make our humor even more cookie cutter then it has to be, I mean honestly the joke isnt that complicated here....
