Family Crests

Anyone knows what theirs is? I'd seen mine before, but my mom sent me a copy of it today. Our families pretty old, our earliest traceable relatives came to the United States in 1680. But here's the family crest from my British relatives:

Weird, huh?

My family is very into geneology. Like, REALLY into it; my aunt learned how to read archaic German cursive so she could decipher ship manifests and shit.
However, that crest isn't hard to tell the legitimacy of; it belongs to my English relatives who came here in the late 1800's, and we know lots about them.
I would never in a million years get a tattoo.

One of my buddies got his crest tatooed and it looks sharp save the fact it is that lion on two feet that you see everywhere

Very cool thread.
Fathers side:

Mothers side:
-------------------- m00nshine is currently vacationing in Maui. Rumor has it he got rolled by drunken natives and is currently prostituting himself in order to pay for airfare back to the mainland but he's having trouble juggling a hairon addiction. He won't be back for a long while.

Your mother's side is the Through the Looking Glass worm? That'd be fuckin' cool. Edit: Okay, I see it now.
Like the colors on your father's crest... I wonder what the colors on mine look like? I'll ask my mom if she's got a color copy.

Hey, I have an idea. Let's make crests for Shroomery members. I'm working one up for Learyfan right now.

Yeah sorry I had to edit out the name on my mothers maiden name crest. I stupidly posted it up at first.
A colored photo would be awesome man. Family history is an extremely fascinating topic.

Happy birthday to your mom man.
You can do a google search: "Last name coat of arms" or "Last name family crest".

If you have a common family name, does everyone with that name share the same crest? Like, do all Smiths have the same family seal? I'm replying to Matt, but if anyone knows, please chime in.
p.s. Happy Birthday to BlissedOut's mom!

That's a very good question that I don't have an answer to. Hopefully somebody will.
However traditionally I believe coat of arms were given to somebody and then passed down through the generations. There's some information on wikipedia regarding coat of arms.

Wait a minute bro, here we go:
Quote:
How do I know this is the right coat of arms for my surname? Many people are of the mistaken belief that a particular family coat of arms is theirs just because their surname is the same or they come from the same country. For example the surname “SMITH” has over 100 different coat of arms for that surname. There can be multiple coat of arms for a particular surname from the same country or from different countries. The makeup of a coat of arms depends on many other factors as well. It depends on which country and what year the coat of arms was made, along with who had it made, and how boastful they were. Always keep in mind that surnames are normally derived from what a person did for a living, but can be derived from the place that the family was from or a description of a person. We use the oldest coat of arms that is in our records. This does not mean it is the only coat of arms out there. The only way to be certain of your family heritage is to have your family line researched by a professional genealogist, and this service can be read about at the following link: Family Genealogy Research. If you have a particular coat of arms that you would like to match, then email yours to us and we'll make it for you.

Very interesting, thanks! I know my last name is derived from a location, I wonder how that plays into it....

Well I know my last name is derived from an occupation and stands for "the bell ringer" or "he who rings the bells". Somewhere way back down the line my family were church bell ringers back in the old country. I know that plays an obvious role. I'm sure location does also.

Very interesting. I would've thought your family is into "importing olive oil" and "protecting" small businesses.

Here's mine:

I actually stopped by a store that sells documents about geneology and got a printout on rice paper parchment. It explains what the surname originates from, lists my oldest documented ancestors (in my case the earliest ancestor on record is from 1170 AD), and lists some of my most accomplished ancestors, whom in my case include an authoress, a doctor, and a divine.

Not in this day in age. That's been dead and gone for years. TV shows and movies are all that's left of it.

Alright I'll tell ya- It's Marion. Frankie the Squealer confessed it in the episode where the mob has Krusty's daughter's violin.
