Washing your hair.
    #5485520 - 04/06/06 06:16 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I want to know if it is really healthy and stuff to not wash your hair at all, and just rinse it every few days in the shower. But no conditioner or shampoo. Right now I wash it every 3 days or so which is what most people recommend. But many people say that after about 2 weeks if you dont wash it, natural oils start washing it for you or something.

Anyone know more on this subject? I want to try it out.

I wish I knew more on the subject. At one point I was getting a bit of a smelly head so I changed shampoos. Sometimes I'll scrub my head lightly with a bar of soap one day, then use shampoo the next because I usually workout and get sweaty. If it's not bad, I'll rinse it with a bit of conditioner or something.

I started using *runs to the washroom*.... damn, brother's in there right now. I think it's Head and Shoulders with zinc. Has a picture of aloe on the front. Leaves a cool, tingly feeling. My head's not so smelly. It sounds kind of sick, but I leaned back one day and actually smelled my hair. I was embarrased. Now I'm kind of self concious about it and I don't trust the doctors in my town... they just tell me to watch my diet and blah blah, fucking blah.

But it's true... watch your diet and don't scrub your dome like crazy. I've tried googling this subject, but I feel that the sources I found weren't too comprehensive. I'm with you; I'd like to know more about the subject. I wouldn't want to NOT wash my hair for too long because I'm afraid it'll get all stank..

my hair feels best when i go long enough without washing it that washing it actually makes it feel soft and vitalized....

so i dunno maybe i might give abstinence from washing a try, do it a few times a week so the natural oils can keep it healthy and moist? the problem is that then dandruff may build up.

but in actuality just getting my hair wet seems to keep it less tangly then washing it and trying to comb it. i have insane mad scientist wavy/curly hair

Its all true. Your hair will clean itself if you let it and rinse it with hot water. Shampoo is not necessary, but damn there sure is a lot of social pressure to use it.

That's some sick shit man. Wash your hair and body, and brush your teeth. Every day.

this may be the wrong board to ask about the merits of washing your hair.

i wash my hair every other week, or so. i'll usually use dr bronner's soap to wash it. then again, i've got dreads, so washing is such a pain in the ass that i tend to do it as rarely as possible

I wash my hair every day. My hair is way too greasy to go without washing it. After about the second or third day, my scalp gets itchy.

crazy people. I wash my hair... with unscented bar soap, perhaps every 2 month. I might shower once every week or so..

I feel no pressure, smell human, and am quite content.

I was going to say the same thing but wondered if I had enough tenure to pull out the hippy-slander. Even though I know it was just a joke...

I only put some moisturizer in my hair yesterday so my noggin wouldn't smell so bad... feels a little funny, but not stinky! I'll wash today and not tomorrow.... my entire life I have been taking baths, then showers each and every day. I only missed one day in high school and ended up being miserable and self concious the whole time. Tried to just enjoy being a stank-ass ho but it didn't work, I wanted to shower.

Hey great thread... I think a lot of people here have long hair and don't know how to pull the full-blown hippie thing off without looking/smelling like you've been lost in the woods for 11 years.

I have curly/wavy hair and it gets all frizzy if I don't treat it right...get's annoying as hell. I have come to the conclusion that hot water is bad for hair. Or at least my hair. I'm sure everyone should treat their hair differently, like everything else.

I would like to see some documented material on the subject, not just "yeah don't wash your hair...it works."

Does spiritual ascention transcend body odor?

Look, I've lived in the woods for long periods of time without shampoo or even soap sometimes. So I think I have a pretty good perspective on body smells. After 2 months in New Hampshire I went in to Boston and everyone stank like chemicals...deodorant, shampoo, cologne and perfume. It was gross.

However I also met a lot of people who had been wearing and hiking in the same clothes all summer. And yes, they smelled worse. Like dead animals.

When you meet a dirty hippy and they stink, it is their clothes. Trust me. If you don't believe me than ask to borrow their bandanna or whatever, walk 100 yards away and take a big whiff. All your body needs to keep itself clean is itself and water. It is when sweat gets trapped in clothes that it begins to fester and stink and make you gross. This is made worse when you are drinking smoking and doing drugs all the time. I know this won't be popular on a drug-website but the truth is when you put poison into your body (which is what 99% of all drugs including alcohol are) your body begins to smell bad.

Of course I keep my hair really really short so I've never had to deal with the stench of dread locks.

I wash my hair on average about once a week or two.... About every other or every third shower... usually water is good enough.. but when I wash it I use whatever shampoo wont make my hair fall out and doesn't smell like wretched chemicals.

I find showering every day to be maniacal and obsessive behaviour. And I don't think it's very good for you in general to be using all these harsh detergents and chemicals on our bodies all the time. Water is all you really need.. a natural soap  sure. But washing every day is totally unnecessary unless you spend all day drenched in your own sweat.. and even in that case water is all you need to rinse it off! Sweat is the bodies own natural way of expelling toxins through the skin. The moisture evaporates, leaving the toxins exposed on your skin, which requires no more than water to rinse it off. And as gluke says, smell usually comes from clothes, not people. The clothes absorb the toxins released through sweat and bacteria grows. So wash your clothes. And clean your body.. but water and a little soap is all that is really needed.

Modern society is way too obsessed with being 'clean' and 'perfect' all the time. Yes, it's good to be clean.. but humans are not meant to shampoo and condition there hair with these chemical cocktails once or twice a day. A shower every two or three days is more than sufficient to maintain 'cleanliness' with a natural balance of body oils.

I used to shower everyday, and I got psoriasis of the scalp. It's not good for your hair. At least it wasn't for mine. Not to mention it's a big waste of those expensive chemicals :smirk:
