Hair Care
    #2876450 - 07/10/04 07:36 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hi, so this isn't a big problem or anything, but I have been growing my hair out long for a while now. I'm a guy that doesn't know too much about keeping it this way, and I mostly kept my hair very short before this. So I was wondering if some people would be kind enough to give me some suggestions and tips, good things to use, etc.

I wasn't sure if I should post this in the off-topic discussion or here. But I thought this may be a more helpful spot. I do have a lot of serious problems also that I've been dealing with for a long time, but I'm not ready to be that open on here, or discuss yet.

Find this stuff called Cakewalk (catwalk? ill check the lable when i get back), its kinda expensive but its GREAT. You use so little and it does so much. I use the oatmeal formula, but ive used most of them and LOVE it.

Get yourself a pick and a regular comb, comb your hair in the shower while the conditioner is still in it. Itll make it 100% eaiser recoming your hair after you dry it off with a towel (i hate hair dryers).

ohh yes, I forgot to state the obvious.

run the pick (sp) through your hair first in the shower, then run the comb through. When you run the comb through it may feel like your pulling your hair out, but your really pulling out all the hair that has already come off, and got tangled with the rest of your hair.

If you dont use the comb, and only the pick, you may find that after weeks and weeks your hair will always be natty.

i wouldnt recommend brushing your hair in the shower.
you will get breakage & split ends in no time at all.

I used to have really long hair...just whatever you do, keep it brushed! My hair gets REALLY curley when it gets long, and it tied itself into permanent knots in no time, and I eventually had to cut it all off becuase of this.

Thanks for all the replies so far. Between Redo and Fortyounce though I'm confused about the shower combing, which of you is correct?

Also, which is better to use ..a comb or a brush? and how often should I use it?

think logically.
hot water will make your hair expand,
and tugging on it with a brush will stress it into breakage & split ends.
i dont even own a hair brush or comb. i can run my fingers through it anytime
without tangles cuz of the conditioner.
i have really fine hair though & everyones different.

youve gotta be nuts to try to brush long hair outside the shower, ive pulled more hair out that way then ever. Just get your hair trimmed every now and then to cut off the split ends.

IMHO wet hair breaks easier.I use pro v as well, its as good as and waay cheaper then Paul Mitchell.Wring out your hair to get the excess water out then GENTLY towel so as not to rough the cuticle :wtf: Also to make brushing easier I dont rinse my conditioner out completely. If your out in the sun alot get the stuff (pro v) with the UV blocker.

This is the gayest post Ive ever made.

Pantene Pro V is shit, take it from a girl with super long hair.

In order to keep long hair looking good, (and I'm assuming you kinda have the shaggy look going), you want it to have a good shape to it. When you go to get your hair cut, ask the hair stylist to put some texture in it. That way, your hair won't be boring and lay flat. Also, if you like the shaggy look, ask them to use a razor. When they use a razor, they literally razor off bits of your hair instead of using scissors and it makes a piece-like and chunky effect.

As far as shampoo and conditioner, use something that won't weigh your hair down. I recommend Dove Shampoo and Conditioner. It smells great, they sell it anywhere (including Target), it's relatively inexpensive and leaves your hair really soft and non-frizzy.

Good luck, buddy!

EDIT: Don't brush your hair, I agree with forty, it'll just fuck it up and make it all puffy.

Let me elaborate. Pantene isn't any better than any other drugstore shampoo, it just has a popular name. And Dove smells better...so I'd go for Dove.

P.S.
I'm always right, so don't get confused, Locus. I've taken care of HB's hair for 2 years now and it looks amazing.
