Okay, from someone who's had long hair for a while...

Just don't wash it that much.  It really depends on how greasy you tend to be, but I can get by with washing my hair once a week with no problems -- once every two if I feel like being a dirtball or just am stuck alone in my house and don't care.  :wink:  Just wash with cheap shampoo and condition afterwards with cheap conditioner.  I must be doing something right -- my hair is one of the few things I get spontaneous compliments on from females.  *wrygrin*

Oh, yeah, as to dealing with brushing and tangles...

My hair's pretty low-maintenance, not-tangly stuff.  When I'm washing my hair, after shampooing, I wet my hands down with conditioner and run my fingers through my hair until any tangles have been removed.  It's a lot easier to do this when your hair is wet and saturated with conditioner -- the conditioner acts as, well, a lubricant, and hairs slide past eachother instead of binding.

As for brushes, I suggest one of the ones with widely-spaced tines and a regular hogshair brush.  Use the former to do every-day brushing to straighten it out and untangle, and the latter to 'finish' your hair with, get everything nice and together, and also to brush out tangles you can't pull out with your fingers.  I usually don't bother with the latter brush unless I'm going to be going out with people or otherwise want to look particularly good.

There's nothing to it. Most annoying comment I get asked - "Do you use Pantene?"
Hell no, I just use any decent shampoo. Ignore the ads about the scientific nonsense. Just brush your hair before you get in the shower and maybe before you go out at night. Wash your hair whenever it needs it (every 2 or 3 days, but depending on how oily your hair is) and get it cut regularly. It actually grows quicker if you get it trimmed regularly and you don't end up with inches of split ends which you then have to cut off.
Also, avoid tying it up. Maybe it's a personal thing, but having my hair tied back tight doesn't feel like it's very good for my hair.

I have long hair. My hair is fucking thick as hell and gets knotted easily and quickly. I used to use herbal essences. I switched over to fructis. Meh. I need to use a lot of conditioner. But that's with any conditioner for me. I just went through some weird thing and now i've decided to stop washing it. Come on dreads

Locus, what kind of hair do you have? There may be a huge difference of opinion just based on straight/curly hair alone. Mine is inbetween wavy/curly, so dry combing it is out of the question. I never use a brush, and never will unless I get my hair cut short.

I also agree on not washing it every day, If you can get by, your hair will be alot better off with washing every few days. We didnt evolve for shampoo/conditioning every day =b

I have pretty straight hair, and a bit wavy, but it curls slightly at the ends. I have to straighten the ends on the sides or else they curl outward and up. And it still does it a bit even after I straighten those parts.

Also, after I take a shower and shampoo/condition, once dried my hair gets more thick and puffy. But I'd rather it be more like it looks when it's wet, like straight and not puffy and thick ya know.

I do only shampoo and condition a few times a week, so i got that part down already.

Shoulder length straight hair tends to curl at the ends. Once you get past the shoulders it should straigthen out more.

It curls before shoulder length as well. It's the worse part of growing your hair out, because it looks so fruity. Some people don't make it past shoulder length because they hate the curling of the hair.

What about lessening the thickness or puffiness that happens after shampooing and conditioning?

lol everyone is saying something different.

I SAY it all depends on your hair type, if it's thin, then just a nice smelling shampoo and condiontiner (yeah i can't spell), if you want fuller hair, use a volume S&C
if you have thick hair (like me,) get a good condiontner, comb it in the shower. and mabey if you've got some frizz, you could use a leave in condiontner insdead. or check out frizz contral products.

or why not just talk to a hair dresser,they can probably tell you what kinda of products are the best for keeping your locks smooth and shiny LOL

p.s. i say wash it every day, or AT LEAST every other day, i personaly can't wait to wash everyother day, mine goes greasy :frown:

What I HAve to say one this is simple

Don't:
*wash your hair every day
*comb/pick/brush your hair in the shower
*its best NOT to brush when it's wet
*tie hair back ALL THE TIME(cuz where the hair tie is it will cause ALOT of breakage in your hair.. not good)
*put tons of hairspray and gel n moose n crap in your hair (it blocks hair growth makes it harder to grow)

Do:
*run fingers thru hair when conditioner is in hair(helps get rid of the already loose hairs and is better to keep the attached hairs well, attached :smile:)
*if nessasary you can put a little bit of hair spray of gel in just dont gunk it up and its best to have the clean not so gunked to your head look... my sister does that and I just want to hide all her products...
*as for shampoo n conditioner use whatever you think works best for your hair... it might take a while to figure out which is BEST for your own hair... I remember when I went thru my "right shampoo" faze I had VO5, herble essance, suave, PM, dove, and like 2 or 3 others and i finally settled with Thermasilk and make sure you read what it says on ANY of the ones you choose find one that best fits your hair type.

But Yea, thats about it or atleast all I can think of Good Luck n Best Wishes!

I still dont understand why not, my hair is as beautiful as ever, I havent even gotten it trimmed in years with NO split ends, and every time i take a shower i pick it and comb it, then re-pick it outside the shower.

I agree with brushing, never brush long hair =b.
