some questions for the flat cake teK
    #548358 - 02/11/02 10:55 PM (15 years, 2 months ago)

hey everyone alohas.
i have a few questions about the flat cake tek.
-about how thick of colonized substrate is to be used to make a flat cake(in inches) in a square shaped casserole dish? and for the damp vermiculite(in inches)?
-when placing crumbled substrate in casserole dish, how tightly packed should it be? and how bout the vermiculite?
-how long will an average half pint cake last throughout however many flushes?(so far i got up to maybe a little over an ounce, dried) are my half pint cakes exhausted? if not what could i do to induce fruiting?

it would be really cool if you guys could help me out. thanks for everything. shroomery rocks.
love peace and ganjah

i am going to attempt this with 3 of my cakes. just wanna see if the yeild is accually increased. seems somewhat logical with more surface area. I also dont understand why you shouldnt leave the verm layer on and call it a casing. this tek seems to be unpopular here at the shroomery, its rarely discussed. why arent others using this tek???????

The vermiculite layers is used as a buffer. It provides moisture to the Flat Cake. The difference between a flat cake and a casing is that you let a casing colonize only a little but of the layer while the purpose of a flat cake is for it to grow all toger like one big cake. The layer is removed after it has done its purpose (to buffer the cake with moisture) and, really, there is no point for it. It has been shown that fruits grow from the side so maybe you should flat cake it then cut it up into a few different sections.

i know what you mean by cutting it up in to smaler flat cakes, i read it on a previous post. so if this would make more shrooms grow, being there is more side room, wouldnt the shrooms grow bigger and healthy with a stroger mycilium network like NOT cutting the flat cake up? catch my drift?

cool thanks for the input, oh yeah so how thick does that vermiculite layer for the flat cake have to be? and to what size would be ideal to get most out of the flat cakes if i were to cut them into smaller flat cake pieces?
thanks

hey wussups alohas. umm ive been dyin to try out your tek. i tried doing up two of my pyrex dishes on the 28 of feb. and today is the 7 of march. the three cakes per pyrex container that were broken up arent looking like its growing together into one cake. but it is turning a little more white though and a lot of condensation is building in the container. i dont think i packed it in good enough.
-would you know what im doing wrong here?
-are you supposed to pack the crumbled substrate down really tight into the pyrex container? and how bout the vermiculite?
-can i leave the flat cakes incubating for a little while longer than what you recommend in your tek?
haha i wanna really get this get on the way. shit after seeing your yeilds. damn cakes rock.
i really need some help from the masters haha asap.
alohas. lates.
ill probably post a pic of my flat cakes this afternoon.
