Vermiculite availability

I've been looking all over town for vermiculite and can't find any anywhere. Finally I went to a nursery, and they told me that 3 of the vermiculite mines in the U.S. are over the limits for asbestos contamination, and that vermiculite is no longer available in the U.S.
Is this true? I see vermiculite available online, but I really need some by this weekend. What about locally available substitutes?

I've been to Menards, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Lowes, and some local nurseries. The guys at Lowes said they have ordered some, but it hasn't come in yet. Only the one nursery seems to know anything about the contamination problem.
I just got off the phone with a hydroponics shop, and they have a few bags of coarse vermiculite left.
Should I go with that or pick up some growool?

the hell? one this contamination crap has JUST been covered. verm is FINE. and two the local nerseries should be the first place you look since verm is a gardening thing most commonly. check em all also you might want to inform the person you talked to not to give out BS info. goodluck with the verm hunt though

Yesterday I had the same thing happen to me some big ass garden store told me I wasn't going to find it anymore in America. Lol I drove down the street only to come across another garden place that had a lot of it. So just keep looking

It would seem that hydroponics shops are the way to go. There are three in town, two of them only have coarse, and one claims to have some finer stuff. I'm going to go check it out later today.
This has suprisingly difficult - a few years ago I was able to buy everything I needed at wal-mart. Now I'm getting flour at organic food stores, jars were nearly impossible to find (but did get them at a grocery store) and now vermiculite.

Almost as if a conspiracy is taking place.

More talk from people that don't know what they are talking about... the people at the nursery that is.
There was a Vermiculite mine in Libby Montana that was found to have asbestos in it. That was a long time ago!~
There are no mines in operation today that doesn't get checked regularly by the EPA...to test for asbestos.
This has turned into an Urban Legend...so to speak. Some stores still won't carry it...because they think it has asbestos in it. And it doesn't!~
more info on verm...

Try local nurseries or landscaping supply stores. I have seen 20 cubic foot bags of it for twenty bucks. I never bought it because it is too much for me, but I think I may go stock up in light of the news. Small nurseries can be a bit pricey, up to six bucks for a pretty small bag.

Easy way to turn course verm into finer: dry it well if it feels damp to the touch (you can dump a bunch in a tray and bake it for a half hour at 350, or in a bowl, microwave for 2 minutes, stir around and wait about 5 minutes, 2 more minutes on, stir again and wait... repeat until dry) Once dry its really brittle. I take it about a cup at a time, dump in a blender, pulse two or three times and voila. (If you do more than a cup at a time you'll end up with verm powder in the bottom of your blender, and big chunks still at the top!) I take it then, grab a big handful, and slide it back and forth between my hands to break up any remaining big chunks. You can get it to the exact size you'd like, and I like how theres some really fine almost dust left... I separate that out and use it for my dry verm layer. Its denser so intuitively it seems that it'd be a better contam guard. Sure its an extra couple of tedious steps but if all you can find is course, there's hope!
