is vermiculite still available? * 1
    #5306607 - 02/16/06 12:08 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

I'm worried now, I've read lots of stuff from old posts on this board about it being discontinued at places like home depot and garden centers. Is this true? What else could I use for a casing material besides horse dung(which I wont be able to collect till the weather warms up again)?

Much love

Gardening centers will always have vermiculite. It's used to keep soil from compacting. It has the advantage that it retains moisture, so your potted plants(pun intended?) will be able to have water longer without watering.

Unfortunately this is true in some cases.

There was a Vermiculite scare many years ago...
One mine in Libby, Montana had Vermiculite with Asbestos found in it.
This mine was shut down...but it created a wide panic that is still felt today.
:frown:

Alot of places have stopped carrying Verm due to the Asbestos scare!~

But if you look around and have some patience...you can find it.

I used to be able to purchase large bags of Verm locally.
Now I have to buy it online...if I don't want to pay big $$$ for small amounts.
:frown:

here is one source of Verm that is online...
http://www.groworganic.com/item_PSO350_VermiculiteMedium4CuFtBag.html

you can also call one of the major manufactors and find out where it is sold near you...their phone number in on this web site...

i spent a day searching my entire town for verm. there was one lady at a walmart who said she remembered seeing bags of it, but they stopped selling it last year.

i finally found 2 bags at a local gardening store. i told the guy i was growing moss for some exotic frogs lol.

I have personally gone to at least 8 Home Depots in the Seattle and Greater Puget Sound area and tried to get them to start carrying Verm again.

It's always the same story...Verm has Asbestos in it and we aren't going to be carrying it anymore!~

Yet in the area with the fireplaces at Home Depot they have these little 2 or 3 pound bags of Verm for putting in gas fireplaces...they just renamed the product to something weird.

I guess I should send an email to Home Depot main office and send them links to the Vermiculite articles.
Maybe the truth will set us free!~

Here is the information on Verm...
http://www.vermiculite.net/

If a few of you help me...we might be able to get some of these places like Home Depot to carry it again!~

Email Home Depot with the link above!~

Well I'm trying to do my part...

I called Home Depot Corp and left information and I'm waiting on a return phone call.
Corporate Office - 770-433-8211
Home Depot Customer Care - 1-800-553-3199

I was also given and address to write to Home Depot on this matter...

Home Depot Corp. Office
2455 Paces Ferry Rd.
Atlanta, Georgia, 30339
attn: Customer Service
subject: Vermiculite

I will be sending off a letter tomorrow morning.  :smirk:

----

I also sent an email to them....

Quote:

Good day,

I'd like to inform you that a product that you discontinued because of an Asbestos scare, does not contain Asbestos. The product is Vermiculite.

Vermiculite is a great product that is used to retain water in soil.
I used to purchase many 4 or 6 yard bags of Vermiculite from my local Home Depot every year for my garden.
In the past couple years you haven't carried the product due to this Asbestos scare.

I'd like to inform you that there is no Asbestos in any Vermiculite that is being sold in the United States.

The Libby Montana mine that was found to have the Asbestos in the Vermiculite was closed down in 1990.
All mines are heavily monitored by the EPA for Asbestos and there has been none found in any of the active mines.

I'd like you to check out this website on Vermiculite.
http://www.vermiculite.net/

I really liked using Vermiculite in my Gardens.
I'd like to see you carry this product in your stores again.
I hate to see a great product not being sold because of false aligations.

I'd also like to point out that you sell another product in your fireplace section of your Seattle stores that is Vermiculite.
I'm not sure what the name of the product is.
The product is used in gas fireplaces for insulation inside the fireplace.

I'd really like to see Vermiculite come back to your stores in the Garden section in the large bags.

Sincerly,
***my name inserted here***

If you would like to send Home Depot an email...

http://www.homedepot.com

then customer service...and then look for the email feature.

Lets do something to improve mycology and make Vermiculite more available to us all!~

I left a message with the President of THERM-O-ROCK.

One of the main distributor of Vermiculite in the United States.

This was the product that you saw in the large bags at Home Depot in the past.

I'm going to try and have him help me with my quest to get Vermiculite back into the Home Depot stores.

I'm a man on a mission!~

$13 - $15 down the street

Has anyone thought of distributing this, don't know about shipping.

Reason being this is a common dilemma some people face.

Buying a shit load and off load it here, for near free + shipping.

Don't know if it would be worth it but I have people beg for it, I pass it along for free +shipping.

It seems to me that shipping should be cheap and I belive that lana has sells some. Its not like any one with the internet can't buy any so long as they get a good shipping price. I think that some places charge for size of box if it is hella light.

I just got a phone call from the President of Thermo-rock...

I explained that most Home Depot's stopped carrying Vermiculite and that I was trying to help get his product back into the Home Depot stores.

I ask him to personally help me contact Home Depot Corp. and try to get Verm back into the stores.
He pretty much walked around the Home Depot issue and wanted me to contact his Northern California rep...to find it in other stores. :frown:
If I had stock in Thermo-rock I think I'd sell it...with the attitude he has on sales!~

I'll call his Northern Cal rep today and see if she has more sales savy than the President of Thermo-rock!~

I'm still waiting on my replies from Home Depot Corp. Office to my email and phone calls.

more to come...

Hey Roadkill, you kick ass!
Way to get shit strait man, we all appreciate it.

Now a tip:
He mines and packages the shit, he doesn't sell it directly to stores.

Find their distributors and talk to them, they are the ones who give a shit. It's their job to get products into stores. Otherwise, the manufacturers would do it themselves. It is it's own pain in the ass. If those distributors don't give a shit, contact that president again and tell him they don't. Ignoring Home Depot and Wally World is a serious business folly. Their are distributors that will actually work to get products they carry into stores.

Once you get hold someone who gives a shit, post their contact info and I'll give them a call and sell them on it too.

~Cappa.
