Vermiculite classified as a carcinogen

I am new to growing and was trying to find some vermiculite. I called up my local Ace Hardware and asked if they sold any. The person on the phone told me that vermiculite had recently been classifed as a carcinogen and that they no longer carried it. He also said I probably wouldn't find any one selling it anymore either. This was in the the twin cities area of Minnesota. I was curious, how would I be able to now get ahold of verm? What stores would carry it?

Verm is carcinogenic? Not good. Often (way too often) people eat cultivated mushrooms with Vermiculite hidden, wrapped around by hyphae. I have opened the stems of mushrooms to find bits of vermiculite. Now, I don't think the vermiculite is actually broken down, but taking into consideration mycelium's ability to break things down, is it possible whatever carcinogenic agents were present in the vermiculite may also be present in the fruiting bodies and/or mycelia? I'm going to consider using something else.

Uh oh, I really shouldn't have eaten that verm cake last week.
Anyway, no, it's all good. Verm is fine, don't get all tweaked out over it. That person on the phone was tweakin. The verm they sell now is fine.

Even the verm with asbestos is only dangerous if you inhale the dust. Eating it won't hurt you. As a precaution, you can always moisten the verm before working with it to keep the dust from rising. RR

Not ALL Vermiculite has asbestos. There was one vermiculite mine that had a large amount of asbestos in it. Actually it spread to the whole town and the company knew it too. Their in deep shit for that. But you don't have to worry about it.
you should be able to find it. I went somewhere and some dumb bitch told me that. Well I still looked and I found some. People just start talking when they don't know what they are talking about. Look at other nurseries and shit and you should find some. Then when you do find some call that fucker back and tell him he is full of shit. The lady i talked to tried saying you have to have a liscence to carry the shit. LOL.

I always wondered about that! It seems that the remaining 49 states are being left in the dark about everything hazardous to our health.

If it's banned, then why is it found in almost every GODDAMN bag of potting soil in the world!?? Yes, sometimes finding bags of the stuff itself can be difficult, but you can usually find it at large hardware/nursery stores, or at places like Lowes. And if you can't, there's always the net...
