What Are Your Two Biggest Problems as a Noobie?
    #5464471 - 03/31/06 03:06 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I was thinking today about the two biggest barriers I've had with cultivation as a noob...
My issues were getting the humidity right in my fruiting chamber, and contamination of bulk substrates.
My humidity is wack, because I'm using a Martha and I just haven't figured out the timing cycles for the ultra sonic and cool mist.
My bulk subs got contaminated because I didn't take the time to be completely anal about sterility. Plus it would help to have a hepa, autoclave, and flow hood.
Anyway, I was curious about other people's two biggest cultivation issues as noobs, and the solutions you've come up with for your problems. Thanks all! --BF

i'd have to say humidity is a big one. i did a casing for my first grow and it was just way fucked up i just couldn't get it right.
That and everytime i PC a syringe so reuse it, it becomes leaky and unuseable...
those are my two main problems :P

humidity is an easy task to conquer. 1-3 inches of soaked perlite will provide 95+% RH for WEEKS. The perlite in my FC right now was hydrated in the beginning of feb and its just now starting to drop below 90 now and then. If you're running a coolmist in your martha it should run 24/7, ultrasonics should be set to go off for 15 min every hr or two, even then sometimes the ultrasonic is overkill.

Contam issues dont require all the things you've listed, i do spawn runs in open air without the aid of a flowhood, globe box, or hepa filter. Clean floors, countertops, and clean surfaces around the area are whats most important. Clean your hands and try to wear fresh clotes or buy a tyvek suit (overkill IMO) to aid sterility. A pressure cooker is a must if you're doing grains, and also if you're pasteurizing horse shit, but you dont need it to do spawn runs.

1. Moisture content of WBS or rye(I haven't had this problem but ALOT of noobs have)

2. Choosing which strain to start with.

I have had contam's too.. But that was because Martha's bottom wasnt a bottom.. It leaked.. got into the carpet... Bad mistake :frown: made me want to cry. I have noticed it getting better though.. I didnt have a prob contams on casings before the last few weeks a jar here and there but never as bad as it is now :frown:  You are having problems colonizing your jars even? That sucks! you have my pitty. Are you sure you arent using to much water? What tek are you using?

most contams are air born, so you should buy an air purifyer to filter the air, the less spores in the air the less chance of contams. buy some silicone and make some self healing innoc ports, clean the room you innoc from head to toe

not becoming self sufficent and relying on buying spores rather then making their own.

biggest mistake is not taking prints first time round

I'm not even that far into my first *successful* grow. *knock on wood*

I would say my biggest problem so far is the unexpected waiting game that comes with this. You can only start so many projects to minimize the time between each one. I have 5 bags going. Each bag has around 2.5-3.5 Quarts worth of WBS. I have 3 different strains I'm playing with(well one is my friends) and I have 3 LC's sitting about. Not to mention I have an extra strain I haven't even touched yet(except for making an LC out of it).... Even with all that waiting is a bitch.

Find a good time-consuming hobby or a job that will symbiotically sap time away from sitting about and thinking too much on the issue.

Patience is what I vote for the my biggest mistake/thing to improve upon.

My second thing is not going with bags the first time. I'm sure jars have the merit in certain areas, but come on guys lets move into the future of bags. They're autoclavable, mycroporous, injectable, messagable, etc. And when you're done, or you have a contam just chuck the bag out. It's really so easy.

Sorting out what is BS & what is not.
Because, there is a lot of probably well intended, but very misguided tek's out there.

Patience, is the KEY factor.

Once, you have that, the world is your rainbow.

Second, learning all the physical procedures.

3rd, learning the involved tricks, to sterile procedures.

ive noticed that things can get complicated if you add too much water.
so my questions is, what happens if you donnt put in enough water??
dry up? wont be any good?

Inadequate moisture causes stalls. Which seldom recover.

For all my birdseed jars I used foo man's wbs tek.And of coarse I did a regular good old fashioned pf tek as well.Every last jar contaminated on me.Than I used a tek I found on here for cracked corn(I don't remember who's it was)And most recently I used magdash's rye tek. Those are the ones that are in the incubator right now.I still have a two days to wait till I go and check on em.After the birdseed and pf nightmare I came to the conclusion that my house just must be polluted with mold spores everywhere so I bought a hepa and also inoculated the rye jars inside a upside down aquarium sprayed down with both alcohol and Lysol so they would at least be in still air.If this contams as well I have no Idea what else I can do.I am so meticulously careful with being sterile I just cant figure out where I'm going wrong. But it sure is frustrating,Its to the point where when something is green I don't even get disappointed cause I just expect it :sad:I made control jars as well to see if I can pinpoint where I'm going wrong.I swear if those rye jars aren't green when I look at them in to days I'm literally going to jump for joy.

My solution to contams... Tai strains. KS and LY are awesome. I think I could spit in the jars and they'd still colonize. (ok, maybe not... but they are tough guys!)
