autoclaving/too high psi/dryness?
    #354383 -

My cakes after colonization (3-4 wks approx) all look fantastic, smell
mushroomy, bright white.. but dry.. I got one small first flush from a PF batch..
then the outside layer dried up. Then I flooded them.. ended up a disaster.
My next attempt with Eq's( all looked great at birth) has been a flop. All got very
smooth and dry,
I have perlite humidification.(High humidity) I even have the ultrasonic for light mist.
I ended up casing...and in that stage now. I think my problem is my cakes
have just enough water to colonize successfully but then poop out just as
after I birth them. Any one use an autoclave? LOWEST PRESSURE..is about 80lbs/
psi. I have claved them at 250degrees for 30min and the pressure is
up some where I think around 120psi. I cked to make sure brf didn't
crystallize. They do colonize. Maybe the autoclaving of the jars has nothing to do with
my problem.. any help??

If they are always coming out too dry you can always dunk right after birth.

Ok..tell me about dunking.. how long ? water temp? what should be their
appearance after? double ended casing right after? Do I risk killing them by dunking?
thank you

Dunk for about 8-12 hours, too long will kill the mycelium, but thats a good time. Anyone feel free to correct me if my figure is wrong. Just use room temp water or cooler. After you dunk the mycelium will get fluffier and the cake will look like a fuzz ball for a little while.

WOW.. 8-12 hours!! Have you ever done that?
geez I accidently hit the switch on my ultrasonic and they
misted for 5 hours and that killed my last cakes. They were like a dead sponge.
And leaving a cake in water for that long is ok? hmmm ummm, makes me nervous...
but I will store that info in the event my cakes are like a rock again.
I'm going to try finch seed and brf plus alittle xtra water next time.. maybe they
will be less dry.. I hope.

thanks again

I dunked for almost 2 days one time in the fridge, and the cakes didn't die, but overnight does the trick.
