THE PERFECT PASTEURIZING MACHINE FOR $8
    #5460531 -

Old School
1950's, 60's & 70's Electric tabletop roasting pan, Dutch oven.

I just bought this built like a tank roaster for $8 (thrift store)
Hold 12 ++ quarts, has a heavy lid, insert & rack.
It heats like a CROCK POT.
It's PORTABLE.
I tested it with water in it & a candy thermometer.
On the 150F setting, it will hold 145/165F all day long.

This old Sumbitch is so perfect, it's unbeliavable.
EDIT TO ADD
If you do cakes (I don't)
You could steam LOTS of PF jars in it.

You mentioned its like a crock pot. How well would an actual crock pot work? I imagine the heat is coming from the bottom, its that a problem??

Crock pots have a LOW & HIGH setting.

Both are too HOT.

agar, how would you go about pasteurizing in this? would you add water and load up bags or would it be possible to load bags with out the water?

thank you agar for you ingenuity and infinite wisdom

There are a couple ways you could go about it.

But, what I did was pour a little water in it, then set the insert in that water, poured a little water in the insert (which gives you a double boiler TIT like effect), then place loaded open plastic bags in the insert, then place the lid on it.

That gives you even moist heat & is as safe as you can get.

I've got some like this myself, not as big as this one tho, or that cheap.

I saw a turkey cooker (smoker?) at wally world for like 12$ last year, it was HUGE, cheap, and it worked (friend got one)...Great for pasturizating straw.

thanks again agar

a bit off subject, i have a few poo questions..

do you hydrate your poo prior to pasteuization?
the horse farm i go to has a pile of comletely composted poo-mulch, the best i've ever seen. the inside of the pile is fairly moist already and i was planning on pasteurizing it and adding water if nessessary.

also in the summer, my region's temps gets into the high 90s. could the inside of a large compost pile reach high enough temps to pasteurize itself?

RK..or maybe it was Magash?

One of 'em didn't pasturize b/c he said it pasturized itself (hot outside) and due to some other factors...I personally would pasturize...Because then you can hydrate it perfectly AND you kill and bugs or possible Larva...

And about your hydrate Q...You pasturize it in water....(the poo in a pillowcase or what have you) and then take it out, hang it or w/e over night and then squeeze it till it feels right (near saturation)...

You don't want it oozing out water, but you want a drip or two if you sqeeze, and a small running drip when you sqeeze hard...

Easy method pictured.
I am not a fan of pillow case method.
It draws gnats & is messy.

i've always pasteurized my poo in oven bags(they suck btw) after i have achieved the desired moisture content. pillow cases are toomessy for my taste.

also how would i store the poo if i won't be using it right away? i find that it can get pretty smelly just sitting in room temp.

I wouldn't let it sit...You're asking for comtams...Just like everything else in this hobby, you're either doing something or you're waiting patiently, and never cutting corners ;P

Agar might know of a way to store it, but i'm sure the best way to go about it is to just pasturize it the night b4 you need it.

And pillowcases aren't bad at all when it comes to draining...Everyone says messy, but i've never had that problem

Oven bags are alright (they get kinda strechy after pc-ing..donno bout pasturization)....They don't allow for you to drain tho...They're plastic bags...YOu'd have to pasturize and then set them in something....Pillow cases (or shirts, that kind of material), works wonders in terms of letting sit overnight and draining.

....Aged horse poo smells like dirt ....Do you mean as in contams.?...

No idea how long you can let it sit, but the longer it sits, the more chance you'll have of contam probs. and the like.
