*TEK* How to hook up a computer fan!!!!

OK so Ive been seeing everyone struggle with hooking up PC case fans for use in their terrariums. Its super simple to do, and cheap as well. First things first, you will need: 1.A wall charger, 12 v DC 2.A female Coaxial Power Plug like this it has a hole that a wall charger end plugs into. 3.Some wire. 4. Computer fans!
Is what you want to do is cut the white connector off the fan. It should leave you with two wires, strip the ends of those. Then take your wall adapter and look at the back it should have something that looks like this: I think the picture explains itself. So when you plug your female adapter onto the end of your wall charger you want to take note of the polarity. Then wire a length of wire from the female adapter to your fan, keep in mind the polarity, red is positive, black negative. You should end up with something like this: The numbers correspond with the above part list. Once you have that hooked up you should be able to plug the setup in the wall and voila! PC fan setup!! You can then plug it into a timer if you'd like to have it go on and off. Also if you want to add a switch, just cut on of the wires running to the fan and put one wire end on one side and the other on the other side of the switch, then you have a switch! Easy. Heres another schematic if you want to wire up multiple fans: Sorry that the drawings aren't great, I made them really quickly.

Nice one mate. Alternatively you could use a PC power supply by modding the ATX plug so the power is always on.
Connect a paper clip or a bit of wire between PWR_OK(grey) and any COM port (black). If you want to get tricky you could connect a switch between them (like one you've ripped out of an old pc) then you can turn it on and off remotely.

you could also use a 9 volt battery with a toggle switch . if you ever had an alarm clock then youve noticed the 9 volt battery plug no one ever uses. just simply rip it out and do the same thing in this tek just without the ac plug

Hmm, I'm not understanding - does the female Coaxial Power Plug come with a male fan connector, or do you simply match up the wires?

Be extrmely careful about the power supply thoug. i've heard rigging one up to not use the case switch can cause fires. Just a warning to make sure you follow the directions carefully.

Even better, and cheaper, than getting an ATX powersupply would be to buy an AT powersupply. These are the older ones that had an actual physical switch attached to the device, so no jumpering it across the connector. Since AT toys are majorly on the decline, somebody would probably pay you to take their used ones away, or a new one could be had for pocket change.

On the atx power supply, some of the newer ones you have to have a 5+ volt charge to get it to work with the jumpers you are talking about and not all of them have the color code you are talking about. Look for pin #11 this is the jumper pin no matter what color it is. If it is one of the newer ones you must splice one of the red wires(5+ volts) with one of the black wires to fool it in to thinking it is attached to a MB. You can search the internet for converting an atx PS to a 12 volt converter and get much better description to what I just wrote.

Ditto to wiggles comment about power supplies causing fires. I think in recent years there a lot of very poorly made, cheap PSU's on the market.
I've had three fail very dramatically inside my PC case. The worst one had a capacitor explode. There was a tremendous bang - like someone fired a gun in my room - and flames shot out of the vent in the back of my case for a moment. Then it proceeded to fill my room with smoke. The other ones mainly just went out then started smoking and burning inside.
I would be slightly wary of leaving a PSU lying around on the floor, on all the time. Probably not a huge deal though.

Do ont buy cheap computer ps`s. I have had many customers ruin good systems buy triing to save money thinking a ps is a ps. Spend alittle more money and get a good one, also if you get one that is a liilte small on the wattage it will not last long.

Is there no easier way to provide constant air exchange than to set up a fire hazard? There must be something that can be purchased and just plugged in to a wall....

Also, what if the 12 DC power supply has a grounded plug? You don't explain what to do with the third wire...could be very dangerous, and you act like it is child's play...

you can always hook up a fuse. for my tomato grow box, i use a fuse for the fan set-up.
