due to the suggestions of many on this board i decided to go around to all my local thrift stores etc. and look for a pressure canner. i did find one rather large one that looks like it would hold about 12-16 half pints but it looked rather old. when dealing with this i want to be a little careful so i dont waste my money or hurt myself as i do not know what kind of condition it is in, but from the pictures on the website it looks to have all the parts. its is an american national pressure canner that says "18" on the top, from the website it looks to be made from 1930-1945. my question is do you guys think it would be safe to fire it up, or should i looks for a newer one or just outlay the cash for a brand new one? also it has no rubber seal on the top, it just locks down with a bunch of screws, the pressure release valve moves fine and there is another one that is just a screw that opens up what looks like a little vent. i have no experience with these at all so i was wondering if someone would clue me in. aso should there be some type of "jiggler" on ther top? thanks....ParticleMan

That brand was very well made. If it looks good......and the price is low......i'd buy it. I'm pretty sure the 18 meant .....18 quarts......btw

alright, thanks for the info guys, i am gonna go pick it up in a few minutes, now with this same brand...since the 50 year old instructions are not included :-) would ya mind giving me a crash course in how do use it without killing myself :-) much appreciated one more thing...the rack is broken, any suggestions on where i could get a new one, or rig something up...my main reason for getting it is the obvious advantages in sterilization....but also i have many problems with water getting in my jars.....i use 3 sheets of tinfoil, so i figure if the jars werent sitting in the water i would have a little more luck

Hi, I m just guessing but I bet if you called American they would get off on you using a 70 year old product which is antique and probably send you some free instructions and who knows maybe some parts. i think its a neat story.

yeah, i might give that a shot.... its works pretty well, the gague actuaually does work and i made some new handles for it with 1/8 in. thick steel, works like a charm. so heres the final deal: old pressure cooker....... 25$ new handles...................6$ bullshitting with the two people that work there about how much we all like canned jelly and fruit.....priceless

well, since its sunday and i am bored, i have decided to do it the old fashioned way.....that is without reading any directions (i dont have any) i put a few inches of water in the bottom, sealed it up and heated with the valve ope until steam came out for 10 min, then i sealed up the valve and pressure rose to 10 p.s.i. pretty steadily. when it got to 10 the release valve started shooting out steam. i considered wetting my pants. when it comes to this i am a huge...well......pussy. metal shrapnel tearing through my body not to mention steam burns dont sound like fun. is it normal for it to start to vent at 10 p.s.i? if so, thats tight. and also, do i just play with the temp of the burner to get it at the right p.s.i. and leave it there? thanks. well i just decided to scak up and go in there again and try to do it, i think the deal is that is has a factory setting of about 10 p.s.i. to start the release valve....do i need a 5 pound weight to set on there to get it to go to 15 p.s.i? hopefully this is the case, becasue now i will be a stupid pussy if i am wrong, as opposed to just a pussy.

most important, for pc in general. make sure there is an ESCAPE valve of some sort. I think it is one of the most important things. They may not have them on the American pressure cookers. Most smaller ones (4 quart jars) have a small plastic plug that will blow out before the pc explodes. Mine is on the top, a 2-3 mm plastic "plug" that plugs a hole on the top. You may be fine without it. Make sure the pinhole steam vent is clear of substances blocking it. It seems youve done that if youve used the cooker already and your still here. Maybe someone who knows this style of pressure cooker could say if they have a release valve. sounds like a steal, i've always wanted one of these p.c's

again thanks for the reply, there is an escape valve (the one that starts going off at 10 PSI), and there is a sort of manual release valve (the one i close after 10 min of steam) so i guess i will try to find one of those 5 lb. weights in order to enable me to get 15 PSI without that escape valve blowing steam all over and letting out my pressure.
