is this the proper way to use a all american pressure cooker..
fill with water, place in jars
put the lid on and sit it to 15psi let it build upto 15 psi with the exhaust valve closed
then open the exhaust valve for 5 minutes
then pressure cook for 60 mins or whatever time you need
i didnt get instructions with mine and i read a few posts about it.. just making sure if this is right
thanks

Go read AA's manual. None of us here are AA technicians. Every AA model is different and the water levels have to be adjusted accordingly. Better safe than sorry. Good luck.

I don't even check the pressure on mine. I just leave the hole in the top open the whole time. I just stick it on the stove over a low heat for about an hour and a half. Just make sure you don't heat it too fast (will cause the glasses/jars to crack). As long as there is a slow steady stream of steam comming from the stem on top then you should be ok. Its worked for me so far Hope that helps! SHR00M0L0GIST

you don't fill it with water. you use around 1 1/2" to 2" of water.
which model do you have? I have several and can help you.
Do you have a guage and a weight on top? Or do you have a guage and a relief valve?
answer....and I'll get back to you.

Roadkill- i've got an All-American 21.5qt PC. I've never been really sure as to how much water to add. How many filterpatch bags filled w/ a dung mix should I be able to fit in there? Usually I PC 2 at a time in it w/ the water level about 4-5" or so from the bottom. After reading this thread I'm reconsidering my method. Also, I have a 4 qt. mirro PC that I'm waiting to receive in a trade. I'm guessing that when I PC w/ the 4qt. that the water level should be about 1-2" from the bottom? What do you think? I think I've been putting too much water in. So therefore could I get some feedback as to how much people ususally PC and the water level height that they use. Something in this format:
Pressure Cooker: AA 21.5qt Water Level: 4-5" Contents: (2) filterpatch bags - 1/3 full of substrate
Another sample would be:
PC - 4qt. Mirro WL - 1-2" C - (4) qt. jars - WBS 2/3 full
(4) 1qt. jars can fit into a 4qt. PC right? I'm not sure, still waiting to receive my 4qt. PC. Any feedback appreciated.

You should be putting as much water in the PC that by the end of the PCing process there is still some water left in the PC.
If the pressure cooker doesn?t have any major leaks, and if you turn the heat lower after the PC has reached the pressure(as you are supposed to do), then 1 inch will usually suffice.

I have a 12 qt national no5 ( like 50 years old ) and i use less than 1 inch of water and have pretty much all of it left when i'm done.. and my gauge says i'm up between 15 and 18 lbs.
I lock the lid, leave the weight off, bring it up to a boil until i get steam out the pipe, then i put on the weight and i'm timing my 1.5 hrs within 20 minutes flat!
