Morchella madness....

is just around the corner!! I know its a bit early yet, but I personally can't wait! I already got the morel fever :) I'm out in the woods each morning trying to spot promising habitat for the coming spring, not to mention I now own 2000 acres that I'm sure has a few morel patches on it. Last year I found my first morel the last week of febuary, I can only hope they start that early again this year. Anyways, just thought I get a reminder out there of the wonderful mushrooms season that is quickly approaching us :) And of course share a few pics of last years pickings just to get everyone thinking of morels and the bountiful harvests to come... What kind of habitat do those guys like? Maybe you can show me once they start poping up.

You know, I still haven't really figured out they're habitat either, I hear previously burned areas are good hunting grounds, but for the most part I look for hardwoods forests and search the edge of the forests, this seems to work well. I do find them in several weilii patches including my main weilii patch, I assume they both like burried woods, probably hardwoods. I will gladly take you morel picking this year if you find the time to accompany me :) I always like taking folks picking. I'll let you know when they start fruiting this year gumby(that is if you don't find some first :) and maybe we can meet up one day this season for a morel hunt. You have to be ontop of ball with these mushrooms, they only fruit for a couple weeks and then they are gone for the rest of the year. LK,

the best place to look for a morel is around a dead elm tree
-------------------- suddenly a flaming stealth banana split the sky like one would hope but never really expect to see in a place like this. Cutting right angle donuts on a dime and stopping right at my Birkenstocks, and me yelping...Holy fucking shit!

yeah, those are nice pics. glad to know I'm not the only one with the itch. so those are M. esculenta, correct? you don't get black morels out there do you? i'm in the PNW so the esculentas are few and far between. keep up the good work, i really appreciate the unbiased posts. so many of us are either anti psilocybe or only psilocybe. thanks for sharing. these are what i'm waiting for...

Is this a black morel? I found this lone specimen a good month before the esculenta started to show up, don't they say that the blacks are usuallt the first true morel to appear and the esculenta follow?? If so, this pic below is probably a variation of a black morel, more like gray. LK,

I've read that apple orchirds are good places to look for morels. If burned areas are a good place to look then I've got the ideal place. During break someone set a hill on fire at my school.. it was all 2foot long dried dead grass, someone burnt all of it, it spread and caught the baseball field on fire... plenty of burnt area to explore. I'll keep my eye out. Peace out, -Gumby

The first pic (TOP). looks like, a Morchella deliciosa, the White or Gray Morel. Bottom pic could be a Morchella esculenta, the Yellow Morel. Note. The Black Morel makes the most sclerotia in culture. The White Morel makes less sclerotia in culture than the Black Morel. The Yellow Morel makes only a few sclerotia in culture.

Damn, those are some trippy looking mushrooms. I have never seen such a thing. Two questions for you guys: 1) Are they active? 2) Why do you like them so much? (Besides just the amazing looks of them!)

You should set your woods alight! Then you'll get lots of morels. Forest fire sites are the best and commercial pickers track the fires over summer for the next sprngs pick. Some of these sites are remote, like up in the Yukon but that is todays 'gold rush'!
