Innoculating in the center of the jar...
    #541012 - 02/05/02 07:33 AM (15 years, 6 months ago)

if there was only one point of entry, less chance for contams, the mycylum would collonise from the center so by the time you could see it comming thru it would nearly be ready to birth. Also there would be more nutrients towards the outside of the cake because it was colonised last, giving more nutrients to the mushrooms.

Oh, i hear that with the 4 points of innoculation only 1 of those point will acctually end up being the finished mycylum (spelling?) because "apparently" the stronger patch kills off the others and takes over, survival of the fittest. So, why bother with the 4 points?

This information is wrong. The strongest mycelium doesn?t kill the other mycelium it just let it work for itself. Meanining that the stronger mycelium uses the network of weaker mycelium to get more nutrients and water. Bur this is still relatively new research. You can read more about this In Paul Stamets? Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms, 3rd edition.

It will take ages to coloniize if you inoculate only at one spot.

yes the network connects and makes istelf stronger as a 'single organism'. Innoculate in as make spots as possible without altering water content.

Since your injecting all the spores into one place, they will all colonize there, and have to work themselves out and around the jar before 100% colonization. It would probably take an extra month or so..(I really dont know).

Doesn't it seem a lot more practical to inject at 4 spots so the mycelium can connect and form one rather than trying to grow from only one spot?

As long as you are somewhat sterile, you shouldnt have problems... ;/
