Is it too late to innoculate these jars?
    #497008 - 12/20/01 02:02 PM (23 years, 2 months ago)

Hello everyone,
AFOAF has these jars (PF tek style) that she boiled and they've been sitting around fro about two months while she debated where to have the spores sent. Anyway, she has the spores now. Can she still innoculate those jars, or does she have to clean them out and re-prep them? Thanks in advance...

If you're using the PF method ... one of the important aspects is the DRY vermiculite layer at the top of the substrate to keep out contams. If the jars have sat around for 2 months this layer may have soaked up some of the moisture from the substrate and not keep out contaminants as effectively. Two months is quite a bit of time. To be safe I'd just clean out the jars, whip up a FRESH batch of substrate for them, sterilize and innoculate. Hell what's one more day after debating for two months? Better to be safe than waste you're whole batch.

Man this is simply awesome timeing!!

As it turns out a friend of mine just managed to get some jars going that were sterilized over 4 months ago!! These same jars were on there third syringe (first two syringes didnt do anything- If you "flame" the needle make damm sure it cools down before inoculating!).

Once again it was at LEAST FOUR MONTHS and they took off perfectly. (PF STYLE)

Personally, I'd start fresh but if there is no contamination after two months then they must still be sterile. Give a shot!
