Well when you start out you won't have a "cake" per se, it's just your substrate for now....

When innoculating, make sure you're doing things sterile (use a face mask or use a piece of clothing over your mouth etc.), sterilize your needle between innoculations, and make sure there's no moving air. Then insert your needle towards the side of the jar, squirt a little love in, turn the jar 1/4 turn and repeat until you've gone all the way around, then I like to inject some directly into the center additionally.

Good luck

thanks, that's what i thought you were supposed to do, with the exception of the 5th squirt in the middle. i how contamiants won't be a problem for me... it seems that a careless beginner (that would be me) can have early attempts easily thwarted from them... (and even the most experienced lose a few from my understanding). whatever, the PF Tek seems easy enough to understand, so hopefully all will go well.

When you inoculate, place the needle against the side of the jar.......and watch the magic flow down the sides. Do that on four different sides. And good luck!
