DXM Flashback? Help!
    #5397288 - 03/13/06 11:40 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Hm...where to start. I suppose I should start off with a brief history of my drug use. I have been smoking weed heavily for roughly 2 years now. I have only had the privilege of doing shrooms twice. :frown: I have experimented with almost every pharmaceutical known to man, and am prescribed to Ambien so I trip off that a couple times a month. I've done coke a handful of times. For a short period I experimented heavily with DXM, I suppose some would have classified it as an addiction. I used to dose quiet often. I'd say somewhere between 40-50 trips in about 4 months. Basically, I am saying I have some experience with substances and know that this experience was not me just being high. Anyways, I got off the syrup about a month ago, as it was beginning to ruin my life. Nothing had purpose, I didn't care about anything but getting my brain fried.

SO

Onto the point of this post. I have experienced what I believe to be a DXM flashback on two previous occasions, and the other night I had what I think to be my third. All of the flashbacks occurred after smoking weed, two of which I had consumed alcohol sometime within 24 hours before smoking. I have read that alcohol can trigger a flashback, as can marijuana. I smoke all the time and didn't have a problem as long as hadn't been drinking recently. This all changed the other night. Myself and 3 other friends were smoking and about 20 minutes into the session I felt odd. Suddenly I was seeing myself from the outside, exactly the way I see myself on DXM. I went outside for some air, and could barely even manage to tie my shoes to get outside.  I stumbled around falling all over the place, and went to my car to listen to some music. Once in the car my vision started to spiral and I was pretty confident I was permanently fucked. It basically felt like I was severely mentally impaired. I could not think. I could not speak. Whenever someone came near me I would get an intense pain in my head, and I thought I could see inside their minds. My face felt exactly the way it does on DXM.

I don't know, this is my idea of a flashback. It literally felt like my brain was being electrocuted. Does anyone know anything about DXM flashbacks and if there are ways to prevent it other than abstinence from DXM use, which I plan not to use ever again. Please do not reply saying you were just really baked, I am a daily smoker, and we were smoking mersh.

If someone has an explanation of what happened, that would be appreciated. I do NOT want to have to worry about this occuring everytime I spark a bowl! :stoned: Also I apologize if this belongs in the trip report forum?

Dude, you had, "somewhere between 30-40 trips in about 4 months"

The after effects your talking about should be expected. You really shouldnt have done that to yourself as Im sure you know. I just hope that goes away.

Those types of drugs are not all that safe. Dissociatives like that do damage the brain. Thats why I say I hope you get over it and can smoke pot normally again. Tryptamines, salvia, ayahuasca and LSD can fuck your head up very badly, but it wears off like clockwork. For some it takes a long time. I just dont know what to say when it comes to that heavy use of DXM. It will get better, but I cant say how much better.
I just hope You used pure dxm medicines or pure pills, because if they were heavy dxm trips and were mixed with other medicines per pill, Id be more worried about my body than my mind.

Good luck with that dude

I would suggest you quit smoking for a little while. Maybe a month ar two and then see if this problem still occurs. If it continues to happen try not to fight the experience, confront it head on and you may be able to learn from it and grow past it.

As memory goes. If you dont use it You loose it.
SO like "hot48yearolds" put it, try to confront it head on if you still want to smoke pot and drink. DO so while sober also. Once you get over the massive change, you will/can forget about it.
Thats when things will truely seem normal to you again.

Thank you for the quick replies. Yes, it was pure DXM medicines. And yes, I realize that I should not have so readily abused the drug. I was in a dark place at the time, and was willing to get fucked up any way possible. I bought into the whole, "Well it's not technically proven that DXM causes brain damage" argument. I have since learned a large amount of respect for all drugs. There is a huge different between drug use, and drug abuse. I have only smoked weed once since the occasion, and it was not a normal high. I have decided to quit smoking for a little while, it has only been a few days so far and my mind feels so much more clear. Also just a fyi I quit drinking due to the fact that when I drink it ALWAYS feels like a low level DXM trip.

Quoted from Erowid:

On the other hand, Olney's lesions have never been found at human recreational levels, and DXM has received little attention. Ketamine users, some of whom have used ketamine for many years, don't typically show mental impairment. Even the few DXM users who do show impairment typically return to normal after staying off DXM for several months, and at least one paper suggests the mental impairment from dissociatives may be caused by depression, not brain damage?Weighing the two sides I personally believe that moderate use of dissociatives is probably no harder on your brain cells than moderate use of alcohol or amphetamines (I said moderate use, not some five day fry-yer-brain speed freak binge), and that if you use DXM sparingly (e.g., once or twice a month at lower plateaus, maybe once or twice a year at upper plateaus), you'll be just fine. In fact, I've never known anyone to suffer lasting impairment even after going through a few months of weekly DXM use at upper plateaus. But I could be wrong! Mild brain damage has a nasty way of showing up years later when you've forgotten about the stupid things you did when you were young. --William E. White, 199814

So, probably not permanent, but don't push the luck! My friend was a pretty heavy user of DXM, probably somewhere around 200 or more trips in three years, and let me tell you, you could tell the strong "before" and "after" difference.

"Tryptamines, salvia, ayahuasca and LSD can fuck your head up very badly, but it wears off like clockwork." I would really like to know what you mean by fuck you up. It does not do physical damage so anything beyond that is just the way you think about it. I cant really belive that you would ever do any of that thinking it fukcs you up

Last year i had a string of DXM flashbacks after a bad trip. The littlest things would trigger them for me, like just having caffeine. Sometimes nothing triggered them at all. Sometimes i got them at work, when i was trying to interact with people in a professional manner. Not fun.

Your situation seems a little different though. Do you think the flashbacks are a result of a bad trip or just too much usage?

My flashbacks eventually became so frequent that i decided to face the problem head-on. I realized i had to accept the feelings i felt during my bad trip. It wasn't easy. One night during the worst flashback ever, i just laid in my bed and let the feelings take control. I dissociated from my body, which i was deathly afraid of. Then after that happened, relief came. No more flashbacks for me since then.

You should really take a break from the weed. It's obviously not helping your situation. Time is the best healer. Just take a break from drugs for a while, like a couple months. If the flashbacks keep happening after you've quit using any drugs (like they did for me), then you may have mental issues that you need to deal with. Whatever happens, don't fight the feelings. Just let them flow through you, and them let them move on. They won't linger if you let the feelings do what they do and then let them move back out of you.
