Another flashback thread
    #11157308 -

So I got into a discussion with someone about the legitimacy of "flashbacks".

So I dug around on the net and found something that supports my opinion on the subject.

---------------------------------------------
Subject expectancy and environmental factors
as determinants of psychedelic flashback experiences
by

J Nerv Ment Dis 1975 Sep; 161(3):157-65

ABSTRACT

This study assessed the roles of expectancy and autonomic arousal in inducing psychedelic flashbacks under conditions of mild sensory deprivation. Subjects with and without previous flashbacks participated. During the first experimental session, subjects were given a drug which they were told would induce flashbacks, and during the second, a drug which was alleged to induce only autonomic arousal. Ephedrine sulfate (causing autonomic changes) or placebo actually was given in counterbalanced order. Subjects of both groups experienced many more psychedelic sensations when they expected flashbacks. Drug effect was nonsignificant. These findings support the view that flashbacks are not "caused" by psychedelic drugs, but by the tendency of some drug users to mislabel and selectively attend to relevant aspects of naturally occurring altered states of consciousness.

Does anyone else think that this whole "flashback" thing is bullshit?

Very interesting, nice hunting.

What would you like to call "Seeing visuals while sober, that one had never knowingly experienced before doing drugs" then?

I think the word flashback works well enough.

I would call it being trained, by psychedelics, to pay more attention to your visual field. Specifically visual field disturbances that most people would ignore or simply not consider otherwise.

Are you are saying that people that have never done drugs have flashbacks?

I'm talking about normal every day non drug induced visual disturbances that everyone has.

Most people ignore them. People that have taken psychedelics think that they have something wrong with them because they simply had never considered these "glitches" before their drug use.

War veterans have flashbacks sometimes whether they did drugs or not.

The visual disturbances I am talking about are not "every day". I am talking about when walls warp and breathe like when you are tripping balls. This happens to me a few times a year, but NEVER before I did acid or mushrooms. It is also a mental "feeling" rather than just a visual occurance.

If I had walls rippling before I did drugs, I would have remembered it. I didn't  ignore hallucinations just because I hadn't done drugs before.

I want a word for when I feel like I am tripping balls, with visual hallucinations, even though I haven't tripped in a year.

You got one? I do. Flashback. If you read all of my posts I NEVER said they were caused by brain damage, or any drug damage; just that drugs cause you to hallucinate years after taking them.

All I'm saying is that a little bit of rippling, pulsing, widening, shifting when you stare at something for a while is not a flashback.

I have to agree with you about full blown psychedelic experiences being flashbacks.

I also would say that psychedelics can give you PTSD and so can war.

When we started this debate you sounded like you were talking about minor movement in the visual field. Which is something that happens to non drug users and drug users get freaked out buy it.

I used to think I had HPPD because I had weird visual effects from staring at anything for more than a few seconds. When I started looking into it I realized I was making it happen and if I stopped worrying about it they were gone. Also the non user people that I talked to said that it was normal for them as well.
