LIZARD HEAT MATS??
    #539237 - 02/03/02 12:00 PM (21 years, 7 months ago)

Hey,
I recently bought heat mats that are used in a pet lizards aquarium to keep it warm - im incubating my jars in a uk version of a "rubbermaid" box with them sitting on the heatmats - i attatched a thermometer to the side of the box which read 79degrees F and i attached 1 to an actual jar which reads 80degrees F.

My question is : has any1 else tried this setup? it seems to be working well tho i worry incase it dries up teh jars (although they show NO sign of that) and just basically is there any bad side effects?

Cheers

As long as you make sure it doesn't get much above 85F you are fine. Sounds like it works well. good luck.

You'll just want to make sure that you dont cook (dry out) your jars.

i do believe that on the instructions for the heat mats it says in capitol letters that you gotta have it attached to the glass. my soultion to this was to get a piece of glass and attach it. then i put the glass in the tub.

And why are you doing this instead of a tub in tub?

Heating mats can be tricky.
Best bet is no direct contact with it.
you sound like you have it under control.

Keep in mind, the best thing is an ambient air temperature of 75 to 80F AROUND the jars.
Without them setting on anything that emits heat.

As that tends to heat them - from the bottom up & they lose moisture.

It also helps to have an open jar of water - in with them.

That tends to increase the ambient RH.

Always remember. Say the Rh in the jar is 100% & outside is 30%.

Rh between the 2 will try to equalize, to the detriment of the Rh inside the jars.
So, keep the outside Rh - up.
Otherwise, your jars lose moisture.

because i can. ive got tits goin and one with heat mats, one with a pipe heating rope like the ones to keep your water line from freezing in the winter. ive got a tit with a hole drilled in it just above the water line on the inner tub so as to keep it humid inside. the way i see it, experimentation is great as long as you can afford to lose that crop or part that your deviating on.
