Heatmat Penetration
    #4612368 - 09/02/05 02:33 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

Iam planning to place my heat mat on the floor under a flat piece of metal (approx 2mm thick) for stealth growing, my PVC terranium box will be placed on top. What I need to know is would the heat from a typical heatmat penetrate effectively through both layers to heat the inside of the terranium?

Probably will. I have used old sweatshirts or blankets as a buffer for a heatmat. The power is constant though so will vary with your room temp. Far better is an aquarium heater.
The main problem with heat mats is overheating. Do you know what power (wattage) it is?

Well originally I had planned to use the heatmat method as opposed to using an aquarium heater as I needed a stealth setup, so the heatmat seemed ideal as I could slip it under a closet or rug, however to ensure optimum temps I would need to buy a thermostat probe with it as well which would ruin any purpose of using it for stealth as using a thermostat would mean wires trailing into my setup. I guess I need to rethink how Iam going to do it. Ideas anyone?

They do have wireless thermometer probes which i think would suit u well, they run only like $10 more than a normal one would. But i'd like to mention that while using a heatmat, never leave it alone/unchecked for longer than 12-24hours. I've heard horror stories of places burning down etc

I have a similar concern:
I want to use a 15 Watt heat mat (meant for seedling germination in a terrarium). The pamphlet it came with said it would keep it a few degrees (C) above ambient, and I'm planning on using it in a 17 degree (C again, sorry) room. Could I place it in a rubbermaid terrarium underneath a bed of perlite? Does anybody have any experience with this type of stuff?
Thanks

A little ocean wave once saw all the big waves in front of her crashing onto the shoreline. She got scared, and asked an old wave beside her "what's gonna happen to me when I hit the sand?!" The old wave chuckled, and said "silly wave, you're not just a wave, you're part of an ocean. And the ocean never ceases."

Heat mats are not great - by any means.

First - if in DIRECT contact - they tend to COOK things.

Second - you want about 10 inches of space between them & something else.

Third - they usually heat 15 degree's over ambient temps.

So, if your room temps swing, so will it.

Cheapest dry heater is a small watt electric bulb - tin foil wrapped, on a dimmer switch for control.

Best wet/dry heater is a submersible fish tank heater.
(the kind with a thermostat dial temp control).

It isn't necessary to heat a terrarium at all if it's in a normal indoor location. Cubes fruit very well at 70F.
